Model and Build Differences

The specification tables distinguish the Kohler Command-equipped 2130/2135 tractors, Onan Elite 2140/2145 models, Briggs & Stratton Vanguard V-twin 2160/2165 tractors, and the Kohler Command V-twin 2185. Engine removal, mounting, controls, muffler work, and tractor-side electrical connections are covered, but internal engine repair is outside this manual's scope. Build changes are tied to the affected assemblies. The manual discusses the Model 2135 steering modification within tractor serials 239,301-242,243 and fender reinforcement plates used on tractor serials 239,301-272,500. Models 2130, 2135, 2140, and 2145 use the 14-tooth steering segment through serial 272,500 and an 18-tooth gear later; the six-speed clutch adjustment rod changes from serial 272,501. Hydro coverage distinguishes BDU-10L-219 units through transaxle serial 006356 from later BDU-10L-221 installations, while the axle-housing fasteners change at transaxle serial 005793.

Diagrams, Testing, and Repair Cautions

Useful illustrated references include Hydro Pump, Neutral Linkage, and Hydraulic Lines, Shift Shaft Assembly, Blade Spindle Assembly, Engine Crank, Normal/Safety Engine Shutdown, and PTO Start/Run. Appendix C adds continuity tests for the starter solenoid, PTO switch, reverse relay, and brake-pedal interlock switch, along with battery inspection, hydrometer testing, and load evaluation. Appendix E identifies connector insulators by part number, while the remaining appendices cover approved bulk service items, mower-belt failure patterns, mower-deck operating principles, and general torque and conversion tables.

The hydro overhaul warns that reinstalling the charge-pump housing in the wrong rotational orientation will prevent priming; forcing close-tolerance components together can damage running surfaces or seals. The AGS clutch procedure also cautions against prying the housings apart because the machined sealing faces can be damaged.

Before repair work, isolate the battery and ignition system, relieve hydraulic pressure, support the tractor with rated stands, and secure the PTO and mower components against movement. Internal drivetrain, hydrostatic, brake, steering, and rotating-blade work should be performed only with the equipment and experience those systems require.
