• M103 engine repair: Engine removal, cylinder-head service, crankshaft and piston work, valve-train inspection, and timing-chain replacement.

Engine Inspection and Fault Isolation

Step-by-step procedures distinguish conventional and 4MATIC oil-sump removal, with separate cylinder-bore, piston and bearing measurements. Camshaft and piston revision tables help match inspection data to the installed engine version.

The cylinder-head machining notes warn that cutting the upper head surface changes the camshaft-bearing bores. A separate oil-level bulletin explains how overfilling can damage the engine.

KE test tables pair connection points and operating conditions with nominal readings and possible causes, giving technicians a common reference for fuel-delivery and electrical checks. The 602.962 EDS section also includes function tests for idle-speed control, EGR and boost control when a complaint produces no stored fault.

Drivetrain Variants and Suspension Setup

The 4MATIC material includes a diagnostic trouble-code extract and a bulletin identifying revised AV/ZS seals in exchange VG30 transfer cases. Its Group 28 torque, capacity and adjustment sheets are reference indexes, not a complete transfer-case overhaul procedure.

Sportline documentation adds spring/damper cross-references, equipment-point tables and variant-specific alignment data. Separate AMG suspension-conversion instructions have their own exclusions, including 4MATIC in the general conversion and USA vehicles in the 124.036 conversion.

Circuit Tracing and Climate-Control Work

Examples include KE injection function diagrams, EDS wiring and vacuum layouts, Power Distribution circuits, Electronic Accelerator System/Cruise Control diagrams, and Wire and Plug Connection Locations. Earlier circuit sheets are combined with later component-location and index updates, so wiring coverage varies by model and year.

Climate-control sections cover compressor, condenser, evaporator and heater-core removal, alongside electrical test programs and vacuum-circuit leak checks. The refrigerant-conversion bulletin addresses the change from R12 to R134a.

Body procedures extend to sliding-roof adjustment, convertible soft-top controls, and airbag/belt-tensioner test programs. Observe the manual's fuel-pressure, electronic-ignition, airbag and pressurized-system precautions before service.

Examples of Sensor Resistance and Thermostat Data

For the 602.962 EDS, the coolant and intake-air temperature sensor table specifies 2.5 kΩ at 20°C and 185 Ω at 100°C, with a ±10% resistance tolerance.

The M103 cooling-system table lists thermostat opening at 85–89°C and full opening at 102°C. These entries sit alongside the fan-control switching data used to assess cooling-system operation.
