The axle data gives measurable setup targets rather than generic adjustment language. For the 181-FBI and 186-FBI front axles, the 2001 specification table gives ring-gear backlash of 0.12–0.20 mm (0.005–0.008 in) and pinion rotating preload with new bearings of 1.7–3.4 N·m (15–30 in-lb). The 8¼ rear-axle procedure specifies a final backlash range of 0.15–0.203 mm (0.006–0.008 in). Major fastener tables include values such as the front axle-shaft nut at 237 N·m (175 ft-lb) and hub/bearing mounting bolts at 102 N·m (75 ft-lb).
Factory-tool references show the repair depth of the axle and suspension sections. Several cautions are specific enough to prevent expensive mistakes. In front-axle pinion service, the manual warns against backing off the pinion nut to reduce rotating torque; over-crushing the collapsible spacer changes bearing preload and can require spacer replacement. During ABS-equipped axle-shaft work, the pressed-on tone ring and nearby wheel-speed sensor are specifically identified as damage-sensitive. The cooling-system sections also identify the reverse-rotation water-pump arrangement used on the gasoline engines; an incorrect pump or incorrect belt routing can result in improper pump rotation and engine overheating.
