This shop manual covers 1983–1990 Ford TW-5, TW-15, TW-25, and TW-35 tractors, including both 2WD and front-wheel-drive variants.

This manual is suited to mechanics experienced in tractor overhaul who have access to splitting stands, hydraulic test equipment, and precision measuring tools.

Engine, Fuel Injection, and Cooling

The six-cylinder direct-injection diesel sections cover unsleeved cylinder bores, service-installed sleeves, and color-coded bearing inserts. TW-5 identification codes distinguish crankshafts with factory undersize main or connecting-rod journals.

Tune-up and rebuild data include firing order, valve clearances, main-bearing running clearances, cylinder-head torque specifications, and coolant capacities by model and heater equipment. Specifications use U.S. Customary and metric units.

Fuel-system sections cover lift-pump overhaul and injector opening-pressure, spray-pattern, seat-leakage, and leak-back tests. Injection-pump coverage is limited to timing and removal/reinstallation; internal pump overhaul is not included.

AiResearch turbocharger service applies to the TW-15, TW-25, and TW-35. The TW-35 also has dedicated coverage of its intercooler tip-turbine fan, heat exchanger, and engine-mounted oil cooler.

Dual Power, Front-Drive Axles, and PTO

The Dual Power planetary unit is standard on the TW-35 and optional on the other models.

Its diagnostic notes explain why a restricted control-valve inlet screen can cause harsh shifts or clutch slippage even when pressure at the PTO supply test port is normal. This helps distinguish a flow restriction from a general pressure-supply problem.

Front-drive sections distinguish early APL-345 axles on TW-5/TW-15/TW-25 tractors and APL-3054 axles on the TW-35 from later APL-355 and APL-365 installations. The later APL-355 applies to TW-5/TW-15; APL-365 applies to TW-25/TW-35.

The early TW-35 transfer case has a separate overhaul procedure. Bearing-preload, bevel-gear mesh, and backlash adjustments accompany axle repair, while PTO sections distinguish dual-speed units from the TW-35 single-speed arrangement.

Exploded views show the Dual Power assembly (Fig. 187) and transmission gears and shafts (Fig. 210). Clutch service identifies the Nuday No. 2142 overhaul fixture and model-specific release-lever gauges.

Hydraulic Lift, Steering, and Brake Variants

Separate hydraulic chapters cover builds before April 1985 and April 1985 onward. Earlier systems give remote valves priority. Later systems use two pumps and a priority valve pack: the lift has priority on main-pump flow, while the auxiliary pump supplies the remote circuit.

Low-pressure hydraulic schematics (Figs. 190A/190B) distinguish the TW-35 brake supply. Lift-system schematics (Figs. 265 and 302) show the two hydraulic layouts. Later coverage includes closed-center De-luxe remote valves and quick-release couplers.

Hydrostatic steering procedures address the pump, steering motor, and external or integral cylinders, with troubleshooting for hard steering, wheel drift, and erratic operation.

Brake coverage separates the TW-5/TW-15/TW-25 reservoir-fed system from TW-35 power-assisted brakes. The manual identifies seal damage and fluid loss as risks of using incorrect fluid in the separate-reservoir brake system.

Electronic Instruments

Electronic-panel coverage includes selector settings for PTO configuration, fuel-tank arrangement, and display units, plus ground-speed calibration for tire rolling radius. Connector views (Fig. 160) identify test pins for sender-circuit diagnosis.

Alternator output, battery-voltage, and starter-current tests are covered. Electrical illustrations show test connections; complete tractor harness wiring diagrams are not included.

Cab and Platform Removal

Cab and platform removal procedures distinguish the early cab from the November 1985-onward design. Cab-handling cautions identify rear-mount damage from backward tilting.

Work on high-pressure hydraulics and heavy tractor assemblies requires the safety precautions and support methods described with the relevant procedures.
