Caterpillar Manual Features & Content Preview
- Two-volume Army technical set: Contains TM 5-2410-237-23 Field Maintenance Manual and TM 5-2410-237-23P Repair Parts and Special Tools List, dated 15 July 2005 and updated by Change 1 in July 2006. Coverage includes ripper NSN 2410-01-223-0350, winch NSN 2410-01-223-7261, ripper/winterized cab NSN 2410-01-253-2118, and winch/winterized cab NSN 2410-01-253-2117.
- Machine and SLEP identification: Covers the Caterpillar 3306 diesel, powershift transmission, Model 57 winch, and winterized-cab equipment. Both non-SLEP and SLEP tractors are addressed; SLEP machines carry an “R” serial-number suffix and use the modular-radiator/reversible-fan arrangement.
- Engine and fuel-system repair: Covers engine removal, cylinder-head and spacer-plate replacement, valve adjustment, crankshaft seals, flywheel and oil-pump service, plus sustainment work on valves, liners, crankshaft and bearings, pistons and rods, camshaft, timing gears, fuel-injection pump, governor, and turbocharger.
- Powertrain, steering, and undercarriage work: Details torque-divider and transmission removal and internal repair, control-valve and oil-pump service, power-train hydraulic tests, final-drive service and bearing adjustment, steering-clutch and brake repair, track inspection and adjustment, recoil spring, rollers, idlers, sprockets, and track-frame replacement.
- Hydraulics, winch, and work equipment: Includes hydraulic pump and valve repair, blade and ripper cylinder overhaul, hydraulic-system tests, winch pressure testing and internal repair, control-linkage adjustment, blade and pusharm removal, ripper maintenance, ROPS and winterized-cab work, armor-package installation, mine-rake provisions, and air-conditioning service.
- Diagnostics, schematics, parts, and tooling: Provides symptom-based troubleshooting, STE/ICE DCA and TK mode GO/NO-GO chain tests, electrical and hydraulic schematics, torque and inspection data, manufactured-tool drawings, and the 760-page RPSTL with repair-parts illustrations through Figure 214 and special-tools Figures 215–217.
Coverage and Publication Scope
This PDF set pairs the repair procedures in TM 5-2410-237-23 with the matching parts and special-tool data in TM 5-2410-237-23P. The field manual contains 255 work packages, including field troubleshooting, removal and installation, adjustment, repair, and selected sustainment-level overhaul chapters. Parts applicability is separated through Usable On Codes WIN, RIP, GRC, and GWC; uncoded entries apply to all covered configurations.
Coverage is based on the listed Army NSNs, equipment configuration, and SLEP status rather than a blanket commercial D7G model-year range. The operator’s manual is a separate publication, TM 5-2410-237-10, so this set is for maintenance and repair rather than basic operating instruction.
Component Assembly Walkthrough
Engine coverage starts with external field work and reaches major internal repair. The 3306 sections address the cylinder head and spacer plate, valve mechanism, crankshaft seals, flywheel housing, lubrication system, and accessory drive. Sustainment packages add valve replacement, cylinder liners, crankshaft and bearings, pistons and connecting rods, camshaft bearings, timing gears, and engine oil-pump repair.
Fuel-system work includes a cylinder cutout test, injector and line replacement, transfer and priming pumps, governor controls, and fuel-injection pump timing and adjustment. Separate work packages cover injection-pump housing, governor, and turbocharger repair. Cooling procedures distinguish the folded-core radiator/fixed fan from the SLEP modular radiator/reversible fan, with radiator pressure testing, water-pump replacement, and fan-drive maintenance.
Powertrain coverage follows the torque divider, powershift transmission, transfer gearing, bevel gear, final drives, steering clutches, brakes, and track system. Major jobs include transmission assembly repair, selector and pressure-control valve repair, final-drive bearing adjustment, steering-clutch hub replacement, track-adjuster and recoil-spring work, and track-frame or track-assembly replacement.
Hydraulic work covers pump repair, blade and ripper valves, cylinder repair, lines and fittings, filters, tank service, and operational pressure tests. Winch-equipped tractors receive dedicated Model 57 pressure-test, clutch, control-valve, gear-pump, linkage, wire-rope, and assembly-repair sections. Configuration-specific packages handle the winterized cab, ROPS, protective-screen bracket welding, MCAP armor, mine-rake installation, and air conditioning.
Diagnostics, Diagrams, and Special Tools
The symptom index covers engine, cooling, electrical, transmission, steering, hydraulic, winch, winterized-cab, and air-conditioning faults. Electrical fault finding is supported by continuity, short-circuit, voltage, and resistance guidance; STE/ICE adds DCA and TK mode chain tests.
Named visual references include the two-sheet Electrical Schematic, two-sheet Hydraulic Schematic, five-sheet Electrical System Group Schematic, Bulldozer Blade and Ripper Hydraulic System Components, Blade Control Valve Components, and the Planetary Transmission exploded view. The parts volume adds configuration-specific exploded views throughout the engine, powertrain, chassis, cab, and work-equipment groups.
The tool sections identify job-specific equipment such as the 8S2243 injector-pump removal wrench, 6V9128 fuel-injector tool kit, 1P2420 transmission stand, and 6V6080 torque multiplier. Manufactured-item drawings cover the FT833 powershift transmission clamp, FT834 powershift transmission tester, and FT1037 winch directional-clutch-shaft gaging bar.
Specifications and Technical References
The RPSTL links illustration items to NSNs, CAGEC entries, manufacturer part numbers, quantities, SMR codes, and configuration-specific UOCs. National Stock Number and part-number indexes support cross-reference work, with repair kits, bulk materiel, and canceled or replaced part-number guidance.
The maintenance volume provides component-specific torque limits, fluid-capacity data, pressure-test specifications, electrical test values, wear and inspection limits, bearing and shim adjustment data, valve and fuel-system settings, and approved expendable materials.
Several cautions are specific enough to matter at the bench. Leaving the timing bolt in the flywheel housing during valve-mechanism work can damage both the flywheel and housing. Final-drive Duo-Cone seals must remain matched pairs with clean, untouched contact faces; mixed or contaminated halves can fail and leak. A removed cylinder head must not be set flat on its lower face because the valves can be damaged.
Heavy-component handling, recoil-spring work, raised blade or ripper testing, hydraulic pressure, pressurized cooling-system service, electrical isolation, and refrigerant work all carry dedicated warnings. Use correctly rated lifting and support equipment, relieve stored pressure, and follow the manual’s safety conditions before beginning repair.
