Engine, Fuel Injection and Cooling

Engine procedures distinguish the 885's 355011, the 995's 455071, the 1210/1212's 455031, and the 1410/1412's 455011. The turbocharged models receive dedicated turbocharger removal and overhaul instructions with an exploded view.

Step-by-step procedures cover tractor splitting and engine removal, cylinder-head and rocker-gear service, valve settings, timing gears, camshaft, pistons and rings, crankshaft bearings, and oil-pump/relief-valve repair.

Fuel-system diagnosis: Bleeding, governor and idle adjustments, pump removal and installation, and injector spray-pattern, leakage, and opening-pressure tests are covered. Injection-pump coverage is limited to external service and timing; internal pump rebuilding is not included.

Cooling and setup data: Radiator removal, thermostat testing, and water-pump overhaul accompany model-specific cooling capacities, idle-speed data, and staged cylinder-head tightening specifications.

Transmission, Clutch and PTO Variants

The 885/885N six- and twelve-speed synchromesh units share coverage with the 995 twelve-speed unit. Separate instructions address the 1210/1410 twelve-speed design and the 1212/1412 Hydra-Shift's hydraulically controlled four-speed planetary section and three-range constant-mesh gearbox.

Hydra-Shift troubleshooting links delayed shifts and slippage to clutch, brake-band, oil-supply, and sequence-valve faults, helping narrow the checks before disassembly. Pressure-gauge connection and early-cover test-point drawings accompany the tests.

Clutch identification: The 1210 changes from Borg & Beck before serial no. 11154230 to Laycock at serial no. 11154230 and up. The manual also explains the “B” and “L” engine-number suffixes introduced in August 1972 to identify these clutch installations.

PTO and rear drive: Coverage distinguishes the 885/995 two-speed PTO, the 1210/1212/1410/1412 two-speed units when equipped, and the 1410/1412 single-speed and reversible-shaft arrangements. Differential-lock repair, bevel-pinion setting with tool DB 8208, rear final drives, and brake adjustment are included, with an exploded view of the disc-brake assembly.

Front Axles and Steering Systems

Two-wheel-drive axle work includes wheel bearings, spindles, pivot pins, the axle main member, tie rods, and toe-in. The 885N has a shim-adjusted hub; early 995 front-support procedures apply before serial no. 934315.

Four-wheel-drive scope: The front-drive axle section is specifically for the 1210 4WD. It covers final drives, front differential, drive shaft, and transfer gearbox, with pinion/spacer-setting instructions and an exploded differential-and-drive-shaft view.

Power steering is optional on the 885, 995, and 1210 2WD, and standard on the 1210 4WD, 1212, 1410, and 1412. The 885's roller pump uses a separate reservoir; the other systems use a gear pump with an integral reservoir.

Side-mounted and transverse cylinders are distinguished in the basic steering schematic and service instructions. Case tools 964172 and 964173 are identified for steering-valve seal and centering-spring work.

Selectamatic Lift and Remote Hydraulics

The system description explains depth, height, traction control (T.C.U.), and remote-cylinder operation. Service sections address hold, by-pass, spool, and latching valves, the rockshaft ram cylinder, top-link sensing unit, filters, and three-way and remote valves.

Pump coverage separates the PTO-housing-driven arrangement on the 885/885N/995 from the front-mounted, crankshaft-driven pumps on the 1210/1212/1410/1412. Single and tandem pump arrangements and the combining valve are illustrated.

Troubleshooting distinguishes failure to lift, failure to hold, and control faults. Pressure checks, bleeding, and control/linkage adjustments include references to David Brown tools 961977 and 962234 for the different test connections.

Lucas Alternator and Starter Testing

The electrical section covers Lucas alternator/regulator and M45/M50 starter testing and overhaul, including diode, rotor, stator, armature, and solenoid checks. The 8TRD/14TR regulator schematics are component-level drawings; a complete tractor wiring-harness diagram is not included.

Assembly Cautions

Timing-cover notes warn that overlong bolts can force the front plate forward and cause leaks; three-cylinder timing-gear instructions flag piston-to-valve interference if shafts turn with the gears removed. The steering-pump section warns that hammering on the shaft can damage its bearings.

Tractor splitting, heavy drivetrain assemblies, hydraulic and injector testing, and brake service require suitable supports, pressure isolation, and established shop safety practices.

Selected Hydraulic and Injector Pressure Settings

Power-steering test data specifies 700 psi for the 885's separate-reservoir system and 1000 psi for the integral-reservoir systems, with fluid at operating temperature and the engine at fast idle.

For the 1212/1412 Hydra-Shift, the recommended relief setting is 71–75 psi with the oil at operating temperature and first gear selected. The Selectamatic lift-system pump relief setting is 2000 psi across the covered models.

Injector opening pressure is 2575 psi in service, rising to 2725 psi for a new injector assembly or a replacement spring.
