Model and Powertrain Coverage

This PDF manual covers the engine, transmission, and hydraulic systems for routine service as well as major repair work. Engine build data lets the owner match the publication to the tractor: 251BG, 301BG, and 377BG gasoline engines are listed for the 770, 870, and 970, while diesel applications are 267BD, 336BD, 401BD, 451BD, and turbocharged 451BDT.

Power Shift is not a blanket option across the entire range. The hydraulically actuated planetary Power Shift unit is covered for the 770, 870, 970, 1070, and 1090, where the four-speed gearbox and three-speed Power Shift section provide 12 forward and four reverse ranges. The 1170 and 1175 use the eight-speed mechanical-shift arrangement covered in the gear-transmission section.

The manual also separates configurations that are easy to confuse during repair or parts selection. The 770/870/970/1070 and late 1175 use the steering-actuator arrangement, while the 1090, 1170, and early 1175 use two external steering cylinders. Brake construction follows a similar split: the 1090, 1170, and early 1175 use power-assisted self-adjusting caliper disc brakes, while the other group uses the lever-type disc-brake arrangements. In the differential chapter, Series 970, 1070, and 1175 after Serial No. 8715247 are identified separately from the 1170/1175 arrangement used prior to that break.

Repair, Test, and Adjustment Depth

The documented shop procedures include tractor splitting and clutch removal, Power Shift clutch and planetary-unit overhaul, Ross steering-pump and control-valve overhaul, injector testing and nozzle repair, hydraulic-pump overhaul and flow testing, differential carrier-bearing preload and bevel-gear backlash setup, IPTO clutch repair, brake hydraulic service, and Draft-O-Matic valve and sensing-linkage adjustment. These sections provide clearances, pressure ports, shim data, timing marks, and reassembly orientation for major repair work.

Power Shift diagnostics specify 180-200 psi clutch operating pressure and 55-65 psi lubrication pressure, with clutch-port leakage checks and C2/C3 retard-valve synchronization using the A2743 monitor and 50/170-psi switches. The dual hydraulic pump is treated as separate 8 gpm and 16 gpm sections: the smaller section is rated at 8 gpm no-load and at least 6.3 gpm at 1500 psi; the larger section is rated at 16 gpm no-load and at least 12.6 gpm at 1500 psi. The same flow-meter test section is used to isolate leakage in the dual remote valve, IPTO clutch, and Power Shift clutches.

Engine data includes cylinder-head tightening in three stages to 210 ft-lb, cold valve clearances of 0.015 inch intake and 0.025 inch exhaust, and diesel injection timing of 29° BTDC on the 770/870/970/1070 versus 30° BTDC on the 1090/1170/1175. Roosa-Master nozzle opening pressure is 3150-3250 psi. Cooling capacity is 40 quarts on the 1170 and 1175, and their planetary final drives take 8-1/4 and 10 quarts per side respectively.

Several details show why model-specific repair information matters. On steering pumps other than the 1175, rotor-to-stator clearance must not exceed 0.007 inch; the 1175 limit is 0.006 inch. On the 1175 Ross steering unit, the lapped sealing faces must be protected from scratches and burrs because sealing depends on their finish and flatness. Differential shim packs must stay identified and on the correct side because they establish carrier-bearing preload and bevel-gear backlash. Power Shift retard valves should not be disturbed casually: incorrect adjustment can either interrupt power flow or overlap opposing clutches into a momentary partial lockup.

The manual also makes important scope limits visible. The Bosch PES section covers timing, removal/reinstallation, and external speed and fuel-delivery adjustments, but directs governor service beyond minor adjustments to a Bosch Service Station. For the Garrett T-04 turbocharger on the 1170/1175, testing, inspection, and removal/reinstallation are covered, while internal turbocharger disassembly is specifically not recommended. The turbocharger must be oil-primed after installation before it is put under load.
