Yamaha Kodiak 450 ATV Owner’s & Service Manual Set, 2003–2007 (P/N LIT-11616-16-01)

Use the YFM450FAR service manual as the workshop reference and consult the applicable supplement for changes to the model you’re servicing. Each supplement’s foreword identifies the earlier publications it calls for.

The base manual covers front differential case service and gear lash adjustment. Yamaha specifies leaving the factory-assembled differential unit and the gear motor intact.

Rear Suspension and Brake Differences

The YFM450FAR base manual covers a swingarm and solid rear axle. The YFM450FAT supplement covers independent rear double wishbones, rear CV shafts, and a stabilizer. The Grizzly supplement’s final gear case exploded view shows how its wet multiple-plate rear brake fits inside the assembly.

The YFM450FAT owner’s manual specifies SAE 80 API GL-4 hypoid oil for the final gear case. The Grizzly supplement specifies Yamaha Friction Modified Shaft Drive Gear Oil for its wet-brake final drive and lists P/N ACC-SHAFT-LU-00 for the U.S. and Oceania.

Fault Tracing and Workshop References

If the front drive fails to engage, the selector circuit diagram and continuity charts help you trace the fault through the relays, selector switch, gear motor, and harness. The YFM450FAS supplement adds checks for the differential-lock override switch. The Grizzly supplement adds headlight relay troubleshooting, and the base manual covers starter motor disassembly, inspection, and reassembly.

Coolant and oil flow diagrams show circulation paths, while cable routing drawings show hose and harness placement. The service tables give tightening torques, clearances, shim sizes, fluid capacities, and electrical test values. The backlash procedures warn that overtightening the ring gear holding bolt can damage the gear. The caliper section warns that solvents can swell or distort brake seals. YFM450FAT Operation and Routine Care

Valve Clearance and Wet Brake Limits Preview

For the YFM450FAR, the base service manual specifies cold valve clearances of 0.06–0.10 mm on the intake and 0.16–0.20 mm on the exhaust.

For the YFM45FGX wet rear brake, the supplement gives a friction plate thickness limit of 2.22 mm and a maximum rear brake plate warpage of 0.2 mm.
