This BRP Operator's Guide covers the 2013 Can-Am Outlander 650 X mr, guide no. 219 001 128, publication code vmo2013-014 en LR. It covers vehicle operation, owner maintenance, troubleshooting and the X mr's requirements for mud, water and dust.

Powertrain and Operating Controls

The covered configuration uses the ROTAX 660 liquid-cooled SOHC twin, with 649.6 cm³ displacement and four valves per cylinder. Fuel injection uses a Dell'Orto 46 mm throttle body; drivetrain references cover the CVT, HI-LO gearbox and Visco-Lok front drive, alongside TTI rear suspension and Dynamic Power Steering.

The controls chapter explains the P-R-N-H-L shift pattern and multifunction switch. The gray Normal key limits acceleration and speed to 70 km/h (43 mph); the black Performance key allows full engine torque and top speed. BRP cautions that the Normal key's limiter may not prevent higher speeds on steep descents.

Winch, roller fairlead, remote control and remote-connection coverage applies to equipment outside North America. The 2WD/4WD selector cautions identify the mechanical-damage risk of changing modes while moving.

X mr Mud Use and Water-Intrusion Checks

Mud-riding guidance calls for low range away from ATV trails and warns against jerking the steering or holding full steering lock in thick mud under heavy throttle.

The special procedures distinguish water in the CVT from water in the air-filter housing. More than 50 ml (2 U.S. oz) in the clean-side air hose, deposits in its drain reservoir or an obstructed hose calls for dealer service beyond draining the housing.

That service extends to the intake, CVT, vented components, fuel-tank breather and lubricant inspection. The damage warnings cover the engine, gearbox, fuel pump, cooling fan, front differential and rear final drive. These clean-side and dirty-side drain references help owners recognize when water ingress needs broader inspection.

Maintenance Procedures and Repair Scope

This is an operator's guide with basic maintenance instructions, not a workshop repair manual for internal engine or drivetrain overhaul.

The air-filter instructions distinguish paper-element cleaning from foam-element cleaning and oiling. Further procedures cover throttle-cable lubrication and adjustment, spark-arrester cleaning, and routine steering, suspension and driveline inspections. Brake coverage provides fluid-level checks and wear limits; BRP assigns brake-fluid replacement and brake repairs to an authorized dealer.

Maintenance schedules: The break-in inspection falls at 10 hours or 300 km (200 mi), whichever comes first. Normal-use schedules run through 750 km/25 hours, 1,500 km/50 hours, 3,000 km/100 hours or one year, and 6,000 km/200 hours or two years, using the earliest applicable limit.

Extreme-environment intervals are halved. Separate after-use care covers the CVT, air box, radiator, vent hoses and shock absorbers following exposure to mud, water or dust.

The schedules list valve-clearance checks, fuel-pump pressure testing, CVT belt and pulley inspection, and 4x4 coupling checks. Wheel alignment, steering play, brake condition, driveline oils, cooling-system pressure testing and fuel-system leak testing are also scheduled; these checklist entries are not detailed test or repair procedures.

BRP's maintenance precautions require engine shutdown and identify hot parts, moving components, electricity and chemicals as hazards. Component-specific cautions explain how compressed air can damage paper-filter fibers, while high-pressure washing can damage radiator fins and electrical or mechanical components.

Troubleshooting and Illustrated References

Troubleshooting covers no-crank and crank/no-start conditions, power loss, overheating, backfire, misfire, hard shifting, and CVT-related failure to move. Gauge messages address D.E.S.S. key recognition, low/high battery voltage, low oil pressure, high temperature, LIMP HOME, CHECK ENGINE, ECM communication, DPS and TPS faults.

Electrical coverage supports basic checks and component identification; wiring diagrams and circuit schematics are not included.

Reference tables cover engine, cooling, electrical, fuel, transmission, drive system, steering, suspension, brakes, tires, wheels, dimensions and loading. The loading section also specifies a maximum trailer tongue weight of 23 kg (50 lb).

Wheel-installation instructions give a final wheel-nut torque of 100 N·m ± 10 N·m (74 lbf-ft ± 7 lbf-ft) and recommend anti-seize on the threads. Brake inspection data identifies 1.0 mm (.039 in) as the minimum pad thickness, with brake repairs referred to an authorized dealer.
