Engine, Cooling and APV Service

Seasonal storage preparation and after-break-in checklists precede the repair sections. Separate engine chapters cover internal inspection and assembly, supported by the Assembly Schematic - 6000 and Assembly Schematic - 8000 drawings. Recoil-starter disassembly and reassembly are also covered.

Crankshaft checks include bearing condition and runout. Connecting-rod, center-bearing and pump-drive-gear work is referred to a qualified crankshaft or machine shop.

Water pumps and cooling: Both engine families have pump disassembly and seal-replacement coverage, supported by the Cooling System Schematic. The assembly notes warn that pump-drive installation can damage the seals. On the 6000, leaving the center crankcase cavity unfilled with oil can damage the center gear.

APV operation: Cable adjustment, valve cleaning and servomotor feedback checks help separate mechanical binding from electrical faults when the exhaust valves stop cycling. ECT coverage explains exhaust-temperature sensing and its effect on ignition timing.

EFI Diagnosis and Electrical Testing

The 6000 and 8000 have separate fault-code lists. Fuel delivery checks distinguish pump output, regulator behavior and injector faults, while temperature charts provide sensor-specific voltage and resistance references. The 6000 electric oil pump is replaced as an assembly.

Diagnostic equipment: The 6000 TPS checks and adjustment, injector coding, and oil-pump priming require CATT II and its separate instructions. For extended EFI testing, the manual refers to the CATT II manual for the 6000 and separate EFI diagnostic documentation and laptop tools for the 8000.

The 8000 TPS section provides checks and adjustment procedures using TPS Adjustment Tool Kit 3639-891. Adjustment and sensor replacement are presented for out-of-warranty machines.

Electrical illustrations: The ignition-switch circuit diagram and Troubleshooting Servomotor flowcharts show terminal connections and fault-isolation paths. These component illustrations accompany the test procedures; a complete vehicle wiring diagram is not included.

Clutch, Chain Case and Brake Work

Clutch service includes cam arms, springs, driven-clutch rollers and bearings. Offset and parallelism checks support diagnosis of premature belt wear, with Clutch Alignment Bar 0644-428 identified for the offset check.

Chain case performance-calibration tables complement the gearing and shaft-service procedures. High-altitude clutching principles are included, with model-specific recalibration sheets referenced separately.

Brake coverage extends to caliper pistons, seals and the driveshaft bearing. The master cylinder is inspected and replaced as an assembly. Torque tables cover drivetrain, steering, chassis and suspension fasteners.

Steering, Suspension and Shock Rebuilding

Steering coverage distinguishes the ZR/XF arrangement from XF High Country/M steering. Suspension procedures include separate RR arm assemblies, rail and idler-wheel work, and chassis/skid-frame mounting-location drawings.

Fox Float X EVOL coverage reaches the air-sleeve DU bushing, internal floating piston, reservoir and shim-stack assembly. Mono-Tube instructions include seal replacement, oil bleeding and nitrogen charging.

Use appropriate protective equipment and ventilation, and follow the manual's precautions for rotating driveline parts, electrical systems and pressurized shocks. Consult a qualified technician if you lack the required experience.

Examples of Engine Inspection and Fuel-Pressure Data

These engine and fuel-system figures are a small selection of the specifications in the manual.

For both engine families, the specification tables list a spark-plug gap of 0.028–0.031 in. and connecting-rod radial play of 0.0001–0.0008 in.

The fuel-pump test specifies 58–62 psi for the 6000 and 42.8–47.3 psi for the 8000, measured with the engine running.
