Powertrain and Chassis Repair
The gasoline-engine chapters cover cylinder heads and valve gear, camshafts, crankshaft and main bearings, pistons and connecting rods, lubrication components, cooling, fuel delivery, ignition, starting and charging, and driveability diagnosis. Diesel coverage adds the 4JG2-NA and 4JG2-Turbo systems, while the 4JX1 material includes the turbocharger, timing gear, valve-clearance adjustment, oil rail and injectors, engine-speed control, and electronic fault diagnosis. The 2002 module separates 6VE1 8-bit and 32-bit control-system material.
Automatic-transmission content extends from preliminary checks, DTC retrieval, stall, line-pressure, and road testing through transmission removal and internal repair. Standard and severe-use maintenance schedules identify engine, transmission, transfer-case, and differential service requirements. Examples include the ACR4 refrigerant service unit 5-8840-0629-0 / J-39500-A, pinion-flange holder 5-8840-2157-0, and pinion oil-seal installer 9-8522-1275-0.
Compressor PAG oil is model-specific; mixing the specified oils can cause poor lubrication and compressor seizure. The cooling section also warns that the 1998 6VE1 fan and belt arrangement is not interchangeable with earlier 6VD1 hardware, since an incorrect fan can reverse airflow, reduce A/C performance, and raise coolant temperature.
Refrigerant must be recovered with approved equipment before the A/C circuit is opened, and the SRS component and wiring-location procedures must be followed before working near airbag components or related wiring.
