Component Breakdown and System Architecture
The operational-theory chapter follows the base unit through the WAIT, standby, initial-rotation, print, and last-rotation periods, with a separate power-on sequence covering CPU initialization, sensor checks, main-motor drive, fuser heating, laser/scanner startup, high-voltage control, and cartridge detection. It explains how the formatter and engine controller coordinate the laser/scanner, image-formation, and pickup/feed/delivery subsystems. The seven-step image process is broken out from primary charging and laser exposure through developing, transfer, separation, fusing, and drum cleaning.
Scanner coverage goes beyond a block-level overview. The manual explains the LED, mirror, lens, and CCD optical path; flatbed and ADF scanning; the ADF pick/feed/lift cycle; paper-present and form sensors; and the logic used to identify mispicks, stalls, and long-document jams. For the M1522nf, the fax section covers the V.34 subsystem, PSTN operation, safety isolation, regional fax-card versions, signaling and ring detection, and 4 MB of nonvolatile fax-page storage. Diagnostics and Service Functions
The diagnostic material is organized to separate a formatter, print engine, scanner, ADF, media-path, or fax fault before parts are changed. The half self-test divides image formation and development from transfer and fusing, while the repetitive-defect reference maps defect spacing to the charging roller, developing cylinder, transfer roller, pressure roller, or fuser sleeve. Scanner calibration, NVRAM and Super NVRAM initialization, control-panel display and button tests, firmware-version checks, configuration and network reports, fax logs, and the flash-based firmware update procedure are also documented.
Parts, Specifications, and Repair Limits
HP limits the removal chapter to FRUs and does not support repair of individual subassemblies or component-level troubleshooting. The scanner is replaced as a complete assembly because opening it outside a cleanroom can contaminate the assembly. A dedicated scanner hinge tool, P/N 5185-7441, is identified for securing the raised scanner when its link assemblies are disengaged.
Chapter 7 contains 14 tables for localized whole-unit replacements, control-panel bezels, documentation, and illustrated parts lists; these are not specification tables. Appendix B separately provides five specification tables covering dimensions and weight, electrical requirements, power consumption, environmental limits, and acoustic emissions. The parts data distinguishes copy and fax formatters, regional fax cards, Western and Asian control-panel configurations, and voltage-specific fuser and engine-controller assemblies.
Two repair cautions deserve attention: bending an FFC or straightening its factory folds can damage the cable, while incomplete connector seating can short a PCA. A replacement fuser also requires the delivery-sensor PCA from the original assembly. Disconnect power for parts removal, keep the laser/scanner protective cover installed, and use ESD protection around the formatter, fax card, control panel, and other sensitive electronics. Powered checks should be limited to the diagnostic procedures defined in the manual.
