Coverage and Manual Organization
This is a Clymer multi-model shop manual, not an OEM model-specific factory manual. Procedures are sorted by horsepower, year, cylinder layout, ignition family, and control arrangement. An identification section locates model and serial data and decodes the model-year suffix used from 1980 onward.
Sea Drive coverage runs from 1982 through 1989 and spans 1.6L, 1.8L, 2.0L, 2.5L, 2.6L, 2.7L, and 3.0L versions, including S-type and ducted configurations. The chapter maps them to the corresponding V4 or V6 cross-flow and loop-charged families and covers only Sea Drive-specific hardware; engine-side repair refers back to the outboard chapters.
Diagnostic Depth and Test Equipment
Troubleshooting is arranged as circuit and component isolation, not just a symptom chart. It covers starter and voltage-drop checks; alternator output, stator, rectifier, and regulator tests; and spark, sensor-coil, charge-coil, ignition-coil, power-pack, isolation-diode, and key/stop-circuit diagnosis. Late-model groups also add running-output, S.L.O.W., and QuikStart tests.
Specified equipment includes an S-80 or M80 neon tester, Stevens PL-88 load adapter, TS-77 terminal extenders, CD or peak-reading voltmeters, and jumper leads using OMC connector pin P/N 511469 and socket P/N 581656. Major Repair and Adjustment Sections
The fuel chapter documents pump overhaul and installation, carburetor cleaning and overhaul, float and low-speed adjustment, tri-jet carburetors, and choke/primer, anti-siphon, tank, and connecting-line checks. Synchronization sections separate early and late inline engines, tiller and remote setups, V4 groups, and V6 groups through 225 HP.
The Power Head chapter covers flywheel and powerhead removal, crankcase disassembly, piston and ring inspection, connecting rods, crankshaft and bearing assemblies, reassembly, reed blocks, and thermostats. The Gearcase chapter distinguishes the hydraulic-assist hydro-mechanical gearcase from the conventional mechanical design and covers water-pump repair, internal overhaul, shift-rod setup, and pressure/vacuum testing before refill. Its internal mechanical-gearcase overhaul section excludes 1989 48 and 50 HP models; general gearcase removal and water-pump coverage still applies.
Two repair traps are spelled out. A used water-pump impeller that has taken a set must not be turned over and reused; reversed vane loading can cause early failure and extensive powerhead damage. Greasing the top of the driveshaft can preload the driveshaft and crankshaft as the lower unit is tightened, leading to powerhead or gearcase failure.
Power trim/tilt coverage separates the external system used on 2-cylinder, some 3-cylinder, and early V4 engines from the integral system used on some 3-cylinder, later V4, and all V6 engines. It provides electrical fault tracing, motor/current-draw tests, pressure checks, and system removal/installation. Internal hydraulic faults are referred to a dealer or qualified specialist rather than covered as a complete component overhaul.
