Correct Fuel and Oil for Outboard Motors
There is a frequent question of if you should be using DFI or standard engine oil. It does make a difference; make sure you're running the right stuff! It is necessary to use the right oil for your outboard, especially if you have a fuel injected outboard. Each engine producer spends millions of dollars developing oils for their engines, including Evinrude. With fuel injected engines, such as the Evinrude D.I or Ficht and E-tec, the oils are specially made to stop carbon building up on the fuel injectors. These oils are more costly, but the additional cost is well worth it. See our Evinrude E-TEC 115 Hp, 150 Hp, 175 Hp, 200 Hp Outboard Engine 2007 Repair Manual for more information about this.
If you have a fuel injected motor, be it a Yamaha HPDI, Mercury Optimax or Evinrude E-TEC etc we suggest buying the oil designed for the particular engine. Carburetor engines aren't so critical when it comes to oils; however, you have to use marine outboard TCW3 oil.
Ideally, it is advised that you always run an outboard manufacturer's oil. These oils are superior in lubrication and corrosion resistance over a lot of the other oils available. When adding up your oil bottle, make sure you use the same oil every time! Mixing oils may cause the different brands to react, causing a mud build up at the bottom of the oil bottle. This will sooner or later block the oil pickup or pump, resulting in Power head damage. See more details in Evinrude E-TEC 115 Hp, 150 Hp, 175 Hp, 200 Hp Outboard Engine 2007 Repair Manual Download.
