Important Service Cautions
Before repair work around the steering wheel or column, dashboard, center console, front seats, center pillars, roof-side areas, rear wheelhouses, or under the rear center seat, review the SRS section. Yellow SRS and pretensioner circuits must not be probed with electrical test equipment; tampering can cause accidental deployment or leave the system inoperative. A Subaru AWD vehicle must never be tested on a single two-wheel dynamometer because uncontrolled movement and serious transmission damage can result. On 5-speed automatic models, non-specified ATF can damage the transmission; Dexron III is described only as a temporary substitute for the 4-speed unit.
The 63-page restraint chapter covers the FMVSS 208 advanced frontal-airbag system, dual-stage inflators, passenger weight and seatbelt-tension sensing, pretensioners, LATCH and top-tether anchors, side and curtain airbags, monitored sensors/modules, warning-light behavior, service boundaries, and modification risks. It is safety and system-reference material, not 68 pages of airbag repair diagnostics.
For technicians, independent repair shops, and experienced DIY owners, this manual is most useful for confirming vehicle configuration, owner-service specifications, warning indicators, and safety limits before parts selection or deeper repair work.
