Maintenance Depth and Repair Limits

Matching the engine-compartment drawings and service data to the correct powertrain helps owners identify service points and avoid applying another configuration’s lubricant information. The reference tables distinguish EJ253, EJ255, and EZ30D engines and provide displacement, bore and stroke, compression ratio, firing order, and fluid capacities.

The drive-belt section distinguishes belt-deflection checks from the automatic tensioner used on six-cylinder models. Spark-plug references identify NGK FR5AP-11, SILFR6A, and ILFR6B by engine, while recommending dealer replacement. Lubricant guidance covers API GL-5 transmission/differential oil, power-steering fluid, and fresh DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake and clutch fluid.

The repair coverage is limited to owner-level service. Internal engine or transmission overhaul, scan-tool fault trees, and full component removal require other documentation. Detailed scheduled-service intervals belong to the separate Warranty and Maintenance Booklet; navigation operation requires its separate supplement.

The automatic-transmission notes warn that non-specified ATF can damage the five-speed unit; Dexron III is described only as a temporary alternative for the four-speed unit.

Driving Systems, Controls and Warnings

SI-DRIVE coverage distinguishes Intelligent, Sport, and Sport Sharp modes. Other operating sections explain the rear viscous limited-slip differential where equipped, ABS, Electronic Brake Force Distribution, Vehicle Dynamics Control, TPMS, cruise control, and audible brake-pad wear warnings.

Tire tables cover applications from P205/55R16 through 215/45R18, cold pressures, trailer-towing rear pressures, and wheel alignment.

The bulb references identify H7 low beams, 9005/HB3 high beams, Outback 9006/HB4 fog lamps, and sedan/wagon rear-lamp differences. Electrical coverage consists of owner checks and circuit-to-fuse assignments; wiring schematics and circuit-level fault tracing are outside its scope.

The restraint chapter explains FMVSS 208 advanced frontal airbags, dual-stage inflators, passenger-weight and seatbelt-tension sensing, pretensioners, monitored sensors/modules, and modification risks. It provides system and safety information rather than airbag repair diagnostics.

Review the SRS precautions before work near the steering wheel/column, dashboard, center console, front seats, center pillars, roof-side areas, rear wheelhouses, or under the rear center seat. Yellow SRS and pretensioner circuits must not be probed with electrical test equipment; tampering can trigger deployment or disable the system.

Oil-Capacity and Wheel-Nut Torque Preview

For oil-and-filter service, guideline engine-oil capacities are 4.2 US qt for EJ253/EJ255 models and 5.8 US qt for EZ30D models. The manual notes that the actual refill depends on drainage and requires confirmation with the dipstick.

The flat-tire section specifies wheel-nut torque of 74–89 lbf·ft (100–120 N·m). Temporary-spare data specifies 60 psi, alongside application-specific tire and pressure tables.
