YFM250XR Operation and Safety
The owner’s publication is specifically labeled YFM250XR, with a first-edition date of March 2002. It explains the main switch and indicator lights, throttle and speed limiter, brake and parking controls, shift pedal, drive-select lever, recoil starter, fuel controls, carriers, and rear-shock adjustment. Identification coverage shows where to locate the key number, VIN, and model label before ordering parts or checking applicability.
Riding chapters address cold- and warm-engine starting, the five-speed constant-mesh transmission, reverse selection, break-in, slope parking, accessory and cargo use, turning, hills, side slopes, shallow water, rough ground, and recovery from a slide or skid. Yamaha’s ATV-specific warnings cover protective equipment, passenger restrictions, off-road-only use, rider training, and operation by riders age 16 or older.

Base Manual, Brake Variants, and Supplements
The workshop PDF is built around the XL(C) base manual and three model-change supplements. Yamaha directs the mechanic to use the applicable supplement together with the earlier publications, so the supplements are not stand-alone repair books.
The base manual supplies the main repair structure: special tools and specifications; periodic adjustment; full engine overhaul; carburetion; middle gear and final drive; wheels, brakes, axle, steering, suspension, and swingarm; electrical diagnosis; and system-based troubleshooting. It lists model codes 4XE1 for U.S., 4XE2 for California, and 4XE3 for Canadian versions; the supplements identify 4XEA for XN, 4XEE for XP, and 1P01 for BT.
The supplements document meaningful hardware changes. XL(C) uses a front drum brake, XN adds a single hydraulic front disc with caliper and master-cylinder repair and bleeding coverage, and XP identifies the dual-disc configuration with revised routing and signal-system information. BT adds BSR33 carburetor data, select-lever changes, revised rear-brake and steering-stem layouts, handlebar installation details, electrical-component locations, and its own wiring diagram.
Technical References and Repair Cautions
Illustrated references include engine-overhaul exploded views, middle-gear shim-selection and lash-adjustment pages, the final-drive symptom chart, cable-routing diagrams, ignition and electric-starting circuit diagrams, and full model-specific wiring diagrams for all four service publications. Several factory cautions matter during repair. The engine chapter warns against hammering out the piston pin or forcing uneven crankcase separation, which can damage the piston area or crankcase sealing surfaces. Hydraulic-brake parts are cleaned with fresh brake fluid rather than solvent because the wrong cleaner can swell and distort seals, and the caliper piston must not be pried out. Middle-gear shim selection must be revisited after specified case, gear, bearing-housing, or shaft replacements; the previous shim stack is not automatically correct.
Scope and Safe Use
The owner file is explicitly titled YFM250XR. The service compilation is titled for XL(C), XN, XP, and BT and does not contain a separately titled YFM250XR service supplement. Match the ATV’s model label, brake configuration, carburetor, and affected assembly before selecting a supplement or ordering parts.
Before inspection or repair, shut the ATV off, secure it on level support, isolate electrical power where required, and keep fuel away from sparks or hot exhaust components. Brake, steering, drivetrain, and engine repairs require appropriate mechanical experience and a final safety check before the ATV is returned to use.
