Model-Year Differences and Repair Depth
For 1981, the specifications show a double-cradle frame, 170 mm telescopic front-fork travel, 110 mm Pro-Link rear travel, a front disc brake with an internal-expanding-shoe rear brake, an 8.4-liter fuel tank, and a PE23A piston-valve carburetor with a 27 mm venturi. The 248 cc air-cooled two-stroke uses a 70 x 64.4 mm bore and stroke, a 6.6:1 compression ratio, a five-speed constant-mesh transmission, and a 20:1 gasoline/oil premix.
The 1982 addendum documents a significant brake-system change: the rear brake becomes a single hydraulic disc. Its dedicated repair coverage includes rear brake fluid service and air bleeding, pad and disc inspection, caliper repair, master-cylinder repair, parking-brake adjustment, and rear-axle work. The 1982 compression ratio is listed at 6.7:1.
For 1983–1984, the chassis and intake specifications change again. Honda also specifies the SANWA electric tester P/N 7308-0020000 or KOWA TH-5H for CDI testing to avoid misleading readings from an unsuitable meter.

Several cautions reveal the repair depth of the manual. Honda specifically warns against prying the crankcase halves apart with a screwdriver because the case mating surfaces can be damaged. Piston and ring assembly is orientation-sensitive, and rotating the cylinder during installation can allow a piston ring to catch in a cylinder port. The carburetor top is intended to be tightened by hand; overtightening it with a tool can damage the carburetor.
Specification Highlights
Having the right numbers on hand prevents costly mistakes at the workbench. Engine cylinder head torque is specified at 24–29 N·m, while the drive/balancer gear requires 40–50 N·m and the AC-generator rotor 65–75 N·m. Transmission oil capacity is 1.1 liters after disassembly and 0.9 liter after draining.

Cylinder bore wear is limited to 70.050 mm, crankshaft runout at the journals to 0.10 mm, clutch-disc thickness to 2.45 mm, and front brake-disc thickness to 3.0 mm. Initial ignition timing is specified at 17 ± 3° BTDC at 2,000 rpm. Rear-shock service includes nitrogen-pressure specifications and explicit nitrogen-only charging requirements.
When handling these vintage three-wheelers, always verify your lifting points and ensure the chassis is securely supported before inspecting heavier drivetrain components.
