Powertrain coverage is specific to the 618 cm³, air-cooled 90-degree L-twin with belt-driven, two-valve Desmodromic heads, Marelli injection/ignition, a hydraulically operated APTC wet clutch, and a six-speed gearbox. That model-specific detail matters when selecting brake parts, timing tools, clutch components, or electrical tests.

Repair and Diagnostic Depth

The engine section supports bench repair well beyond routine service. It covers oil-pump disassembly and overhaul, valve and rocker-arm work, valve-shim measurement, engine-timing verification, timing-belt and pulley removal and installation, camshaft bearing and seal inspection, cylinder-head rebuilding, and cylinder/piston inspection. Two cross-references are especially useful during real repair work. Throttle-cable adjustment can disturb the throttle-body setting, so the manual links those jobs instead of treating them separately. In the timing section, pulley marks must be indexed correctly and the self-locking roller ring nuts are identified as replacement items; reuse or incorrect alignment can result in serious engine damage.

The brake and clutch chapters cover removal, installation, hose routing, external component maintenance, and hydraulic bleeding, but they also identify internal master-cylinder, slave-cylinder, and caliper overhaul as safety-critical work not recommended by the component manufacturers. This is workshop-level documentation, not a beginner’s tutorial. Ducati states that basic trade knowledge is assumed, additional installation information may be found in the parts catalog, and later Technical Bulletins can supersede individual procedures. Use the manual with the motorcycle securely supported, the electrical system isolated where specified, and proper protection when handling brake fluid and loaded mechanical assemblies.
