System Overview
The manual opens with body-style and driveline specifications, V.I.N. application tables, label locations, approved fuels and lubricants, sealants and adhesives, standard-bolt torque tables, and factory lifting, towing, and tie-down points. It then moves through periodic maintenance, special tools, emission control and vacuum fitting, on-car engine service, internal engine repair, lubrication, cooling, fuel injection, fuel delivery, engine electrical service, and selected large-format wiring diagrams.
This is substantially deeper than an owner’s maintenance guide. The included chapters use component exploded views, service-data tables, removal and installation coverage, disassembly and reassembly information, inspection limits, electrical checks, diagnostic flowcharts, and troubleshooting tables. Capacity data is divided by body, driveline, transmission, and turbo configuration; a single cooling-system or 5-speed transmission capacity does not apply across every listed model.
Coverage, Identification, and Variants
The V.I.N. tables define the applicable sequential-number ranges as 200001 and later for 4-Door Sedan, 400001 and later for Station Wagon, 002001 and later for Touring Wagon, and 800001 and later for 3-Door models. Separate drawings locate the vehicle V.I.N., engine serial number, transmission serial number, safety-certification plate, emission-control labels, V.I.N. plate, and color-code label before parts are ordered or repair work begins.
Configuration tables distinguish 5-speed manual, 3-speed automatic, and 4-speed automatic transmissions; single-range and dual-range 4WD; FWD, selectable 4WD, and full-time 4WD; and SPFI versus MPFI turbo engines. Emissions and fuel-injection information is also separated for California, 49-state, and Canadian applications, including manual- and automatic-transmission diagnostic specifications and automatic shoulder-belt wiring variants.
Engine, Fuel, and Electrical Repair Content
The engine chapters cover timing-belt removal, installation, tensioning, and alignment; camshaft and valve-rocker service; cylinder-head removal and inspection; valve-guide, valve, and spring work; cylinder-block inspection; and piston, connecting-rod, and crankshaft service. Lubrication coverage includes oil-pump disassembly, rotor and case-clearance checks, relief-valve inspection, oil-pressure-switch and gauge information, and a lubrication-line diagram. Cooling-system coverage adds water-pump, thermostat, thermometer, radiator, cooling-fan, and fan-motor procedures with system troubleshooting.
Fuel-system work extends from the tank and fuel-level meter to the filler pipe, separator, filter, pump, and delivery, return, and evaporation lines. The SPFI section provides general troubleshooting, self-diagnosis operating modes, trouble-code lists, connector pinouts, harness checks, and individual circuit charts. MPFI turbo coverage includes system operation, throttle body, injectors and resistor, auxiliary air valve, coolant thermosensor, pressure regulator, turbocharger controls, service checks, and a self-diagnosis overview. The later individual MPFI trouble-code charts referenced by the chapter are not part of this PDF.
Engine-electrical material covers MT- and AT-specific starter service, alternator testing and overhaul, distributor service, ignition-coil inspection, and spark-plug information. Large-format examples include the SPFI system schematic, MPFI turbo schematic, EGR valve and flow-passage inspection chart, SPFI self-diagnosis flowcharts, lubrication-line diagram, and SPFI/MPFI engine-electrical wiring diagrams with and without automatic shoulder belts.

Several repair traps are called out directly. Solvent or degreaser can permanently damage the EGR valve diaphragm. Forcing a cold oxygen sensor can damage the exhaust pipe, and the timing-belt section warns against scratching the crankshaft with the tensioner wrench. For under-vehicle work, use the designated lift and safety-stand points shown in the manual; the factory instructions specifically warn against working beneath a vehicle supported only by its jack.
