McCormick Manual Features & Content Preview
- 107-page PDF with 105 pages from the International Harvester manual plus two seller-added insert pages; covers the McCormick Farmall H and high-clearance Farmall HV and includes more than 90 factory illustrations.
- Identifies FBH/FBHV tractor and FBHM/FBHVM engine serial prefixes, with separate operating guidance for gasoline, distillate, and kerosene engines.
- Covers cold and warm starting, changeover from gasoline to distillate or kerosene, radiator-shutter and manifold-heat control, driving, belt-pulley and PTO operation, and Hydraulic Lift-All/Remote Control setup and air removal.
- Details routine service and adjustment of the carburetor, oil and air cleaners, cooling system, valve clearance, clutch, brakes, wheel tread, toe-in, and adjustable wide front axle.
- Includes distributor and magneto removal, installation, timing, and breaker-point service; generator polarization and charging-system checks; starting-motor service; battery testing; and separate starting-and-lighting wiring diagrams for both electrical configurations.
- Provides H- and HV-specific lubrication charts, periodic service schedules, cause-and-remedy troubleshooting tables, capacity and adjustment data, and attachment coverage for axle, wheel, belt-pulley, hydraulic, speed, and ballast equipment.
Operating Manual Scope
This is an operator's manual with minor service and adjustment coverage, not a full overhaul or repair manual. It is best suited to owners and experienced operators who understand basic mechanical and electrical safety and need factory guidance for operation, seasonal maintenance, troubleshooting, and tractor setup. Internal engine work involving connecting-rod or crankshaft bearings, pistons, rings, and valve grinding is specifically referred to an International Harvester dealer. Full transmission, differential, steering-gear, and hydraulic-pump rebuild procedures are also outside the book's scope, so a separate service and repair manual is required for those jobs.
Fuel-System and Engine Service
The fuel sections distinguish the single-tank gasoline arrangement from distillate and kerosene tractors with an auxiliary gasoline starting tank. They explain gasoline warm-up, changeover to the main fuel, change-back before shutdown, radiator-shutter use, manifold-heat settings, and operation of a distillate engine on gasoline. The reason for the separate instructions is practical: opening both tank valves can mix the fuels and leave the tractor hard to start, while insufficient manifold heat can contribute to poor vaporization and crankcase-oil dilution.
Factory procedures cover carburetor removal, installation, idle and main-fuel adjustment; fuel-strainer and screen cleaning; oil-filter element replacement; air-cleaner service; cooling-system draining, flushing, rust prevention, fan-belt adjustment, and water-pump packing. The engine chapter adds valve-clearance adjustment, cylinder-head gasket tightening guidance, and lubrication schedules tailored to gasoline versus heavy-fuel operation.
Electrical, Chassis, and Lift-All Coverage
The electrical chapters separate tractors with battery ignition and voltage regulation from magneto-equipped tractors using a cut-out relay and manual charging-rate control. Procedures include distributor or magneto removal and installation, engine timing, breaker-point service, generator belt and commutator care, generator polarization, third-brush adjustment, starting-motor removal, and battery hydrometer testing.
Brake equalization, clutch-pedal free travel, front-wheel bearing service, toe-in, H and HV wheel-tread arrangements, and the adjustable wide front axle in short- and long-wheelbase positions are covered with related setup drawings. Lift-All material explains the three pressure outlets, regular and delayed lift arrangements, single-acting cylinders, Remote Control connection and priming, stop-collar depth control, reservoir service, and hose care.
Named visual references include Location of Controls, Cutaway View of Oil Filter, Distributor Partially Disassembled for Servicing, the two Starting and Lighting Wiring Diagrams, and the labeled Cutaway View of Engine.
Troubleshooting and Specifications
Cause-and-remedy tables address hard starting, irregular running, loss of power, overheating, oil-pressure problems, excess fuel or oil use, ignition and charging faults, brake trouble, transmission noise or shifting complaints, steering, tires, and Lift-All concerns. The specification section supplies lubricant and fluid capacities, engine and PTO speeds, ignition and valve settings, clutch and brake adjustments, charging data, tire pressures, tread settings, and overall dimensions.
When the belt-pulley unit is reinstalled, its original shim arrangement must be preserved because the stack controls gear tooth contact. In the voltage-regulated system, the generator-polarizing jumper must not contact the field terminal; the manual warns that this can damage the regulator.
Repair coverage remains limited to minor service and adjustment. The manual's safety instructions call for stopping rotating equipment, keeping PTO and belt-drive shields in place, securely supporting the tractor, releasing radiator pressure, and disconnecting the battery before applicable work.
