Model and Serial Identification

The coverage table places the Farmall Super M series at F-501 through F-52627 and L-500001 through L-512541. It identifies Super M and Super MV with C-264 engine prefixes and chassis letters SM and SMV; Super MD and Super MDV use D-264 prefixes and chassis letters SMD and SMDV. Super M and MV tractors equipped for LPG are identified as SML and SMVL.

The Farmall Super M-TA series begins at 60001. Its four listed configurations are the carbureted Super M-TA (SM-TA), carbureted high-clearance Super M-TA (SM-TAV), diesel Super M-TA (SM-TAD), and diesel high-clearance Super M-TA (SM-TADV). Cotton Picker coverage is specifically for Super M and Super MD tractor or mounting attachments used with M-12-H, MD-12-H, M-120, and MD-120 pickers; it should not be read as blanket Cotton Picker coverage for every M-TA model.

Do not match parts from the tractor model alone. TC-46 states that engine and chassis serial numbers were not made to correspond, so both numbers and all prefix or suffix letters matter when selecting a serial-dependent part for a repair.

How the Parts Listings Work

Each unit begins with an exploded-view plate, followed by a noun-first listing with reference number, IH part number, description, serial applicability, and quantity required per tractor. Particularly useful plates include the carbureted cylinder head and valve gear, diesel injection pump/nozzle/piping group, Torque Amplifier, independent PTO rear unit, Lift-All pump and reservoir arrangements, and Cotton Picker mounting and change-over assemblies.

The introduction explains superseded suffixes and the difference between partial and complete assemblies: X and R11-R89 numbers may represent either, while Y and R91-R99 numbers ordinarily identify complete assemblies. Parts marked § are not serviced separately. A front unit index locates assemblies by system, and the full numerical index cross-references part numbers to their listing pages.

The suffix-letter chart on catalog page 453 adds another layer of identification. F and G distinguish Cotton Picker mounting and tractor equipment; P identifies independent PTO without a Torque Amplifier; R and S distinguish Torque Amplifier installations with transmission-driven or independent PTO provisions. Other codes separate distillate, kerosene, LPG, high-altitude, Rockford clutch, and low-low-speed configurations. The catalog also warns that specially numbered hardware is made for its particular location and should not be replaced with ordinary standard fasteners, a substitution that can compromise the attached assembly during service.

Scope and Safety

TC-46 is a parts catalog, not a service manual. It does not provide repair sequences, disassembly instructions, torque tables, adjustment procedures, troubleshooting charts, or electrical wiring schematics. Detailed diesel injection-pump parts are referred to separate PU-27A and PU-40 catalogs, and parts prices are assigned to the separately issued CH-219 price list.

Use the applicable factory service instructions for any repair involving heavy chassis components, rotating driveline parts, or pressurized Lift-All hydraulics. Exploded views show parts relationships for identification; they are not safe removal or installation sequences.
