Allis Chalmers Manual Features & Content Preview

  • Manual identity and model coverage: 1981 Intertec Publishing I&T shop manual, designation AC-32, supplied as a 46-page PDF for Allis-Chalmers 5020 and 5030 tractors. The manual states that 5020 procedures also apply to the Simplicity 9523 and that 5030 procedures also apply to the Simplicity 9528.
  • Serial-specific transmission coverage: 5020 2WD tractors use the eight-speed chapter before tractor serial 2691 and the twelve-speed chapter from serial 2691 onward. The 5020 4WD has its own twelve-forward/three-reverse section. For the 5030 2WD, the break is before tractor serial 1905 for eight-speed and serial 1905 onward for twelve-speed. 5030 4WD is not covered.
  • Engine and diesel-system repair: Covers engine-and-clutch removal, cylinder-head and valve work, timing gears and camshaft, pistons and rods, crankshaft and bearings, oil-pump inspection, fuel-system bleeding, injection-pump timing and removal, and injector diagnosis, testing, and overhaul.
  • Clutch and gearbox overhaul: Details tractor splitting, clutch and release-bearing service, shift-cover interlocks, countershafts, reverse idlers, input and pinion shafts, range gearing, selective shimming, PTO shafts, and overrunning-clutch checks.
  • Axle, final-drive, and brake work: Documents rear differential and final-drive repair, brake overhaul, PTO output-shaft service, and gear-contact adjustment. The 5020 4WD section adds front final drives, axle housings, kingpins, universal joints, and front-differential overhaul.
  • Hydraulic and electrical procedures: Includes hydraulic-pump removal and overhaul, relief-pressure testing and adjustment, lift-control valve and ram service, linkage setup, glow-plug checks, Hitachi alternator and starter tests, and the wiring diagram used across the covered models.
  • Repair drawings and reference data: Provides exploded assembly views, component cross-sections, gear-contact illustrations, and specification data for torque, clearances, wear limits, spring tests, electrical checks, fluid capacities, hydraulic pressure, bearing rolling torque, shaft end play, and gear backlash.

This manual is suited to experienced owners and repair technicians who are equipped for tractor splitting and precision mechanical testing; several jobs assume secure lifting and blocking equipment, pullers, torque wrenches, dial indicators, an injector tester, or a hydraulic pressure gauge.

Detailed Technical Scope

This shop manual delivers a systematic overview of the engine, transmission, axle, PTO, brake, and hydraulic assemblies. The engine section gets inside the Toyosha S126 used in the 5020 and the Toyosha S148 used in the 5030, both two-cylinder diesels. It covers cylinder-head inspection and resurfacing limits, valve-seat and guide work, swirl-chamber service, cold tappet adjustment, valve-timing alignment, timing-gear inspection, camshaft removal, and oil-pump repair. Piston, ring, and cylinder data distinguish the two engines, while connecting-rod, crankshaft, and main-bearing specifications support internal overhaul work.

The diesel chapter identifies the two-plunger Diesel KIKI PES-K injection pump, straight pintle nozzles, and swirl-chamber combustion system. Procedures address filter service, fuel-system bleeding, injection spill timing, pump removal and installation, engine-speed adjustment, faulty-nozzle isolation, opening-pressure and spray-pattern testing, and injector overhaul. The manual limits internal injection-pump work and recalibration to technicians with the required specifications, equipment, and training.

Separate gearbox chapters show how the shifter rails and interlock balls fit together, how the countershaft, reverse idler, input shaft, pinion or sub-gear shaft, and PTO drive are removed, and where selective washers and shims control end play, bearing preload, and gear position. Differential sections add dial-indicator backlash checks and tooth-contact pattern diagnosis. Among the most useful graphics are the all-model wiring diagram, the 4WD front-axle cross-section, individual eight- and twelve-speed transmission cross-sections, the bevel-gear mesh-pattern illustration, and the hydraulic lowering-rate valve and lift-linkage setting views.

Specification and Data Highlights

The condensed data and repair sections supply component-specific torque tables, fits and clearances, inspection and wear limits, valve-spring tests, starter and alternator test values, hydraulic test data, and fluid requirements. Because the transmission, center housing, rear axles, and hydraulic system share one sump, capacity depends on configuration: 21 liters for the 5020 2WD and eight-speed 5030, 25.7 liters for the 5020 4WD, and 25.5 liters for the twelve-speed 5030.

The assembly notes warn that the aluminum clutch housing can be damaged while the tractor is being split and that displaced O-rings inside the hydraulic pump defeat its pressure-balancing system. Engine, clutch, and transmission removal must be done with the tractor securely blocked and each heavy section independently supported. Injector testing presents a high-pressure spray hazard capable of penetrating skin.
