Engine and Build Identification

The opening data separates the 149-cu.-in. non-diesel D-14; 149-cu.-in. non-diesel and 175-cu.-in. diesel D-15; 160-cu.-in. non-diesel and 175-cu.-in. diesel D-15 Series II; and 226-cu.-in. non-diesel and 262-cu.-in. diesel D-17 builds. Those distinctions carry into valve, timing, bearing, oiling, fuel, cooling, and electrical specifications.

Production breaks are handled at component level. D15-9001 changes front-hub sealing and plunger-pump intake-valve construction. On the D-17, D17-38899 changes transmission sealing, bearing-retainer details, and bevel gears to a matched set; D17-42001 separates earlier shoe brakes from the later Bendix band/disc system and also changes power-steering and plunger-pump details. D17-75001 identifies the Series IV clutch-driven, side-mounted hydraulic pump arrangement. Engine-specific notes cover the D-17 non-diesel change at 17-19978 and the late diesel water-pump design at 119938, including the 117087-117104 exception.

Procedure and Specification Depth

Transmission and differential chapters document bearing preload and end-play setup, selective snap-ring and shim use, gear backlash, tooth-contact checks, and bevel-pinion mesh positioning. Hydraulic sections explain the hold, unloading, relief, discharge, sensing, and remote-control valve functions before moving into pressure and flow checks, pump overhaul, lift-cylinder leakage tests, and Traction-Booster, position-control, torsion-bar, and self-canceling adjustments.

The diesel chapter covers fuel-system fault isolation, nozzle leakage/spray/opening-pressure tests, nozzle and holder repair, energy-cell cleaning, injection-pump timing by pump part number, and pump removal and installation. It does not provide an internal Roosa-Master pump rebuild; adjustments requiring the pump cover to be opened are reserved for experienced diesel-pump personnel.

Named service equipment includes Ensign gauge 8276, Kent-Moore J-6902, American Bosch kit TSE 7779, and an OTC Y 81-21 hydraulic tester. Figure 106 also shows a fabricated Power-Director hollow-shaft removal tool based on Allis-Chalmers nut P/N 229428. Reference data covers component torque, clearances and wear limits, bearing end play, spring tests, lubrication and capacities, hydraulic pressure/flow, and electrical unit tests.

The figure sequence runs through Fig. 194. Wiring Figs. 184-194 distinguish D-14, both D-15 generations, and early, Series III, and Series IV D-17 non-diesel and diesel systems.

The plunger-pump chapter warns that an incorrectly seated linkage roller can damage the linkage when the cover screws are tightened. The gear-pump chapters likewise caution against prying the sections apart because the sealing faces can be damaged. Securely support separated tractor sections, release hydraulic pressure, and follow the applicable OEM information and standard shop safety practices before beginning repair work.
