Model and Drive Identification
Coverage is organized by OMC engine-package code. The model table includes 232BMRPWS and 232BPRPWS through 584APRPWS and 584AMLPWS. It decodes M/P as mechanical or power steering and L/R as counter- or standard-rotation vertical drives, then ties each package to its vertical-drive assembly and transom-mount number. A separate ratio chart distinguishes the drive families: 2.00:1 for 2.3L, 1.86:1 for 3.0L, 1.68:1 for 4.3L, 1.59:1 for 5.0L, and 1.41:1 for 5.7L/5.8L applications.
Diagnostic and Repair Coverage
The service-information section supplies the baseline data used before teardown: tune-up sequence, compression testing and limit charts, timing procedures, fuel requirements, lubrication and fluid-capacity data, belt adjustment, storage and submerged-engine procedures, break-in checks, general torque tables, and system-isolation troubleshooting.
Electrical coverage is divided by engine and ignition configuration. It addresses batteries and cables, charging and cranking systems, circuit protection, sending units, trim/tilt circuits, spark-plug and firing-order data, ESA operation, component-specific test data, and the timing-sensor, knock-sensor, coil-pack, and ignition-module arrangement used on the 4.3L HO.
Fuel chapters separate the Rochester 2-barrel used on 3.0L PWC packages, Holley 2-barrel applications on 2.3L, 3.0L/HO, 4.3L, and 5.0L/HO PWS packages, and Holley 4-barrel coverage for 5.7L and 4.3L HO/5.8L PWS packages. These sections add fuel-pump pressure and vacuum tests, filter and line service, carburetor disassembly and inspection, adjustment data, and boat-, engine-, and carburetor-side troubleshooting.
Internal drive repair is covered, not just routine lubrication and adjustment. The transom section addresses exhaust and U-joint bellows, gimbal and pivot bearings, hydraulic manifolds, trim cylinders, water passages, and shift-cable installation and adjustment. Upper- and lower-unit chapters add U-joint shaft service, water-pump repair, bearing-carrier work, drive- and pinion-shaft shimming, propeller-shaft and gear service, shift-rod setup, lubricant procedures, and final leak testing.

The trim/tilt chapter follows hydraulic operation through trim-out, tilt-up, trim-in, relief, shallow-water, reverse, impact, manual-release, and thermal-expansion conditions, then moves into pressure testing and component repair. Steering coverage includes pump and cylinder diagnosis, hose and cable service, leak checks, and air purging. The throttle/shift section covers remote-control repair, cable setup, ESA interrupter and overstroke-switch testing, and fault isolation for hard shifting, ignition interruption, and jumping out of gear.
Engine-Section Scope
The engine chapters are not identical in depth. The 3.0L and 4.3L/4.3L HO/5.7L sections contain major internal repair coverage for cylinder heads and valves, camshafts and bearings, crankshafts, main and rod bearings, block inspection and conditioning, pistons and rings, oil pumps, and timing components.
The 2.3L chapter concentrates on the timing belt, timing checks, manifolds, oil pan and pump, rear seal, rocker and lash-adjuster work, valve-clearance inspection, water pump, compression and cam-lobe testing, and PCV service. For 2.3L procedures outside that chapter, the publication directs the technician to the Ford Power Products Service Manual P/N 194-216.
The 5.0L/5.0L HO/5.8L chapter is a marine-service section covering core plugs, rear seal, manifolds and exhaust, mounts, oil pan and pump, valve train, water pump, compression checks, and specifications; it should not be treated as the same full block-overhaul chapter provided for the 3.0L and Chevrolet-based 4.3L/5.7L engines. The 4.3L/5.7L section likewise points to the appropriate Chevrolet Engine Service Manual for additional engine operations beyond this volume.
Schematics, Special Tools, and Assembly Cautions

The manual flags several assembly errors with direct component consequences. On the standard-rotation lower unit, the propeller-shaft bearing housing must be installed with its cast “UP” mark correctly oriented, and using the retainer screws to pull the housing into place can strip the threads. The counter-rotation clutch dog is directional; reversing it prevents full forward engagement and can immediately damage the dog and gear. During drive removal, unsupported trim cylinders can drop as the pivot rod comes out and damage the hydraulic lines.
