1991–1998 Case/International 5120, 5130 & 5140 Tractor Shop Manual (P/N 5120–5140)

This shop manual covers the 1991–1998 Case International 5120, 5130, and 5140 tractors, with repair procedures for the engine, drivetrain, steering, hydraulics, and electrical components.

• Engine repair: Engine removal, cylinder-head service, crankshaft and main-bearing inspection, valve-train adjustment, and timing gear installation.

• Fuel and air systems: Injection-pump timing, injector testing and overhaul, Holset turbocharger service, and aftercooler removal on the early 5120.

Engine, Fuel System, and Cooling

The engine assembly procedures cover crankshaft and main-bearing clearances, valve-train specifications, and timing gear configurations. Injection-pump drive-gear timing letters differ by model. Model-specific cylinder-head tightening sequences and piston-protrusion checks support correct head-gasket selection after machining.

Injection-pump removal and timing are covered alongside injector opening-pressure, spray-pattern, and seat-leakage tests. Governor service beyond minor speed adjustments is assigned to an authorized diesel service shop. The injector overhaul section warns that a stuck nozzle valve turning with the cap nut can damage the locating dowels or valve stop.

Holset turbocharger service includes inspection and overhaul. Resting the unit's weight on the compressor or turbine blades can damage them. The early 5120 aftercooler has separate removal and installation instructions.

Cooling-system coverage includes radiator removal, thermostat testing, water-pump replacement, and belt-tensioner checks.

Transmission Overhaul and Fault Diagnosis

Detailed procedures cover splitting the tractor between the speed and range transmissions, Powershift manifold service, and drop-shaft bearing-shim selection. Exploded shaft views and the Powershift transmission cross-section show the clutch and gear arrangements.

Powershift indicator flash codes are paired with electrical checks and hydraulic pressure tests. These references help separate a shift-control fault from a clutch-pressure problem before planning internal repair.

Synchromesh service includes synchronizer-shim charts. The shuttle and Creeper sections add clutch, interlock, and linkage-adjustment details.

Hydraulic Lift and Pump Service

The hydraulic lift system sections cover draft and position control through spool centering, maximum-height, position-sensing, and drop-rate adjustments. Rockshaft/lift-cylinder overhaul and the position-control sensing-valve cross-section show the related internal components.

Charge/lubrication-pump and main-pump pressure and flow tests are treated separately. Remote-valve service distinguishes the first priority valve from the other valves and includes detent kick-out pressure adjustment.

Electrical Tests and Instrument Calibration

Charging-output tests, starting-motor bench tests, and the hydraulic-oil temperature/resistance chart provide component-specific diagnostic references. The alternator ammeter/load-tester connection sketch and range-switch connector views with continuity charts support circuit checks. Complete tractor wiring diagrams are not included.

Digital instrument-cluster programming covers static and dynamic ground-speed calibration. Wheel-slip indication requires the optional True Ground Speed radar sensor.

Axles, Brakes, and Rear PTO

Front-wheel-drive (MFWD) service covers planetary hubs, differential setup, and front-drive clutch testing. Two-wheel-drive steering knuckles have a separate exploded view. Danfoss hand-pump and steering-cylinder procedures account for differences between axle configurations.

Rear final-drive overhaul covers flanged and rowcrop axles. Brake sections include bleeding and master-cylinder repair, while rear PTO service extends to the clutch pack, control valve, gears, and shafts.

Carefully block the tractor when splitting the housings, and completely relieve all system pressure before opening hydraulic lines.

For all covered models, cold valve tappet clearance is 0.25 mm (0.010 in.) at the intake valves and 0.50 mm (0.020 in.) at the exhaust valves.

For front-wheel installation on two-wheel-drive models, the manual specifies a lug-nut torque of 300 N·m (220 ft-lb).
