1985–1990 Case/International 385, 485, 585, 685 & 885 Diesel Tractor Shop Manual

This shop manual covers the 1985–1990 Case/International 385, 485, 585, 685, and 885 diesel tractors in two- and four-wheel-drive configurations.

• Engine repair: Engine removal, cylinder-head service, piston and wet-sleeve inspection, crankshaft bearings, timing gears, and four-cylinder engine balancer overhaul.

• Diesel fuel system: Robert Bosch VE injection-pump removal and static timing, control-linkage adjustments, fuel-filter bleeding, and injector-nozzle testing and overhaul.

• Transmission and clutch: Synchromesh speed and range gearbox overhaul, optional two-speed Power Shift and Forward-Reverse units, regulator valves, and engine-clutch service.

• Axles and final drives: ZF front-drive axle overhaul, planetary hubs, bevel gears, differential locks, rear axles, and bearing-preload and backlash adjustments.

• Steering and hydraulics: Danfoss hydrostatic steering tests, multiple control valve (MCV) service, hydraulic lift adjustments, rockshaft removal, and auxiliary control-valve repair.

• Brakes and PTO: Brake-pedal adjustment and bleeding, independent power take-off operating-pressure tests, and PTO clutch, shaft, and gear repair.

• Electrical diagnosis: Charging-circuit checks, alternator testing and overhaul, Lucas and Bosch starter service, and illustrated electrical test connections.

This manual is suited to experienced tractor mechanics equipped for tractor splitting, hydraulic pressure testing, and precision component measurement.

Engine, Fuel System and Cooling

Engine procedures include sleeve replacement, camshaft-bearing inspection, and balancer timing. Exploded assembly views, torque tables, and wear limits accompany the overhaul procedures.

Cylinder-head service addresses injector nozzle sleeves; the handling cautions explain how protruding injector tips can be damaged.

Injection-pump limits: The Bosch VE section covers removal, installation, static timing, and speed/shut-off controls. Internal pump overhaul is outside its scope and is referred to a suitably equipped diesel service facility.

Radiator removal, thermostat checks, and water-pump overhaul are included, with a sectional pump view showing the impeller relationship. The fuel section also describes ether starting-aid tests.

Clutch, Gearboxes and Axle Setup

Laycock and Rockford engine-clutch designs have separate linkage settings. Cab-equipped tractors also receive clutch master/slave-cylinder service and bleeding procedures.

Transmission work includes tractor splitting with the Churchill MS 2700 support tool and low/direct-drive clutch shim-selection charts. Forward-Reverse shuttle coverage is limited to Models 385, 485, 585, and 685.

Front-axle procedures distinguish differentials with and without limited-slip clutch discs, plus mechanical and electric/hydraulic transfer gearboxes. Bevel ring-gear tooth-contact patterns and the CAS-1881 measuring-ring cutaway support pinion setting.

Planetary-bearing shim charts help select shims from measured dimensions, while the contact-pattern drawings help assess gear mesh during an axle rebuild. Front-drive axle hub lubrication is specified as SAE 90 EP.

Steering, Hitch Controls and Rear-Frame Service

An engine-test-speed/pump-output chart supports steering flow tests. Hydraulic lift troubleshooting separates failure to lift, slow lowering, and position-holding faults, with procedures for the unloading/flow-control valve, raise-rate valve, and lift cylinder.

Auxiliary valve service distinguishes hydraulic and mechanical check-valve designs. The manual cautions that incorrect handling of the mechanical-check version can damage the valve spool.

Brake assembly and master-cylinder overhaul cover the self-equalizing wet single-disc system. The PTO chapter distinguishes single- and dual-speed layouts and standard- and heavy-duty clutch packs.

Before servicing these systems, secure the tractor and relieve hydraulic pressure.

Charging and Starting Tests

Charging diagnosis includes warning-light circuit checks and regulator-bypass tests for Lucas A115-45, A127-45, and A127-65 alternators. Starter sections include armature, field-coil, and brush-holder insulation test diagrams.

Across the covered engines, crankshaft main journal diameter is listed as 3.1484–3.1492 inches.

The valve tables specify a 0.012-inch tappet gap for intake and exhaust with the engine warm. Intake valve stem-to-guide diametral clearance is 0.0016–0.0025 inch; this is a component-fit specification, separate from tappet adjustment.
