Model Coverage and Scope
Despite the Owner’s Service Manual title, this is not a basic operating handbook. The publication combines competition maintenance and machine setup with repair procedures that reach from pre-race inspection and periodic service to engine bottom-end work and suspension overhaul. Coverage is tied to the K4 publication rather than a blanket 2002–2014 model range.
The RM85 and RM85L are not treated as interchangeable chassis. Model-specific data distinguishes their final reduction, drive-chain specification, tire fitment, overall dimensions, rear-shock spring rate, spring preload, and rebound-damping setup. That separation matters when selecting parts or applying settings to the standard-wheel RM85 versus the large-wheel RM85L.
Technical Maintenance Overview
The engine chapters go well beyond top-end replacement. They document cylinder-head, cylinder, piston, piston-ring, exhaust-valve, and exhaust-valve-governor inspection and reassembly. Lower-end coverage includes primary-drive removal, crankcase separation, transmission removal, shift-fork and gear inspection, crankshaft checks, oil-seal and bearing replacement, and final crankcase assembly. Clutch plates, the clutch sleeve hub, kick-starter mechanism, and gearshift linkage each receive their own repair procedures.

The fork section has a clear limit: Suzuki says not to disassemble the damper-rod assembly, even though the chapter covers seals, bushings, spring, oil, and overall reassembly. Important cautions also call out the left-hand-thread primary driven gear nut, piston-ring end alignment at the locating pin during cylinder installation, and rear-linkage bolt orientation. Missing those details risks thread or piston-ring damage and can interfere with suspension movement or damage the linkage.
Key drawings include the cylinder/piston/exhaust-valve construction view, transmission/crankshaft layout, front-fork/steering and rear-suspension assembly views, the magneto-CDI ignition circuit, and wire/cable/hose routing sheets. Factory tool references include crankcase separating tool 09920-13120, crankshaft installer 09910-32812, and clutch sleeve hub holder 09920-53740. Rear-shock repair involves a pressurized unit, and brake repair depends on correct fluid handling and complete bleeding. Leave those jobs to a qualified technician when the required tools or experience are not available.
