Engine Overhaul, Drivetrain Service and Circuit Diagnosis

The following selected coverage outlines the main workshop areas. Other included topics range from cruise-control troubleshooting to door-glass and window-regulator service.

• Engine repair: Step-by-step timing-belt replacement, DOHC timing-chain service, cylinder-head work, and internal crankshaft, piston, and bearing inspection.

Engine Mechanical Work and Maintenance

Prior to beginning any undercarriage work, ensure the vehicle is securely supported with properly rated jack stands at the factory-designated frame lift points to prevent severe structural damage or personal injury.

Valve train and lubrication: Hydraulic lash-adjuster troubleshooting distinguishes air entry and oil-supply problems, with different repair paths for SOHC rocker-arm assemblies and DOHC adjusters. The timing-belt section warns that twisting or prying the belt can damage its core.

Transmission and Differential Repair

Automatic transmission: The 4L30-E section combines DELCO ELECTRONICS TCM fault charts with stall and line-pressure tests, valve-body service, and internal clutch repair. Its fluid-level precautions explain how overfilling can cause foaming, abnormal shifts, and transmission damage.

The Hydraulic Circuit Diagram appendix shows oil flow by operating range and gear, including converter-clutch applied and released conditions. Differential chapters provide gear-contact patterns, shim-selection information, and bearing-preload checks, with separate treatment of the rear limited-slip differential.

Oil-Pressure and Compressor-Clutch Specification Preview

For 6VD1 engine diagnosis, the oil-pressure check specifies 392–550 kPa at 3,000 rpm with the engine at normal operating temperature, approximately 80°C.

For the DKV-14D compressor, the magnetic-clutch installation section specifies an assembled clutch clearance of 0.3–0.6 mm and provides adjustment-shim thicknesses.
