1999–2003 John Deere 260 & 270 Skid Steer Technical Manual (P/N TM1780)

The November 2003 edition of John Deere TM1780 covers the 1999–2003 260 and 270 skid steer loaders, including Series II electrical, hydraulic, and hydrostatic configurations.

Injection-pump timing uses the JT07158 TIME TRAC tester and JDE81-4 timing pin. The manual warns that adjusting pump position with the engine running can seize the injection pump. Its fast-idle instructions reserve factory-sealed adjustments for an authorized EPA-certified service center.

The 270 gear-reduction starter section provides a Starting Motor Exploded View, solenoid and brush tests, field-winding checks, commutator-bar testing, and assembly instructions. General starter and alternator repair is referred to the separate CTM77.

Diagnosis tables connect test points with expected results and follow-up checks, helping separate interlock-switch faults from wiring or solenoid problems.

Hydrostatic Drive, Axles, and Brakes

These examples represent a small selection of the manual's engine and component specifications. Compression ratios are 17.8:1 for the 260's 3029T and 17.6:1 for the 270's 4045D.

The timing discussion relates a 1 mm injection-pump flange offset to approximately 2° on the timing-meter display. For the specified 270 gear-reduction starter, minimum worn-brush length is 10 mm (0.40 in.).
