This set combines two model-family manuals with targeted articles that go deeper into T5 overhaul, axle setup, LN8 engine repair, suspension work, and electrical fault tracing. It is a mixed aftermarket reference set, not a single GM factory shop manual.

Engine, Drivetrain, and Chassis Coverage

Both volumes cover engine removal and installation across the included engine families. A 1990 article identifies the throttle-body-injected four-cylinder as LN8, VIN E and details fuel-pressure release, intake and exhaust manifolds, cylinder-head service, front-cover and crankshaft-seal work, pushrod side cover, rocker arms and pushrods, hydraulic lifters, camshaft and timing gear, water pump, lubrication system, oil pump, and internal inspection. A separate general-overhaul article adds cleaning and crack-detection methods, valve-guide and seat work, pistons, rods, bearings, crankshaft, camshaft and block inspection, rear seals, pre-oiling, initial startup, and final adjustments.

The Borg-Warner T5 article goes beyond transmission removal. It documents identification, internal disassembly, output-shaft and synchronizer service, bearing and end-play checks, inspection, reassembly, exploded views, and component torque tables. The automatic-transmission supplement covers S/T-series removal and transfer-case removal rather than an internal automatic-transmission rebuild.

Front and rear axle articles cover shaft, bearing, and seal replacement; 4WD vacuum-actuator and shift-cable service; the right axle tube and inner shaft; CV joints; carrier and differential overhaul; pinion-depth setup; side-bearing preload; backlash; and tooth-contact checks. Separate 2WD and 4WD suspension files distinguish coil-spring and torsion-bar front ends instead of treating them as interchangeable.

Wiring, Testing, and Shop Reference

Representative electrical material includes the 1986 engine-compartment and headlight diagram, 1990 charging and starting circuits, dashboard-harness and instrument-cluster diagram, power-door-lock and window circuit, four-cylinder TBI engine harness, and S/T windshield-wiper and delay-motor schematics. Cruise-control coverage adds S/T wiring and diagnostic charts for the servo, release switches, control switch, and vehicle-speed sensor. Instrument-panel sections address warning lamps and gauges, DRAC operation, speedometer calibration, sender testing, printed-circuit service, vehicle-speed-sensor checks, and an exploded S/T cluster view.

The main repair volume states that its wiring diagrams are typical, commonly needed circuits rather than every diagram for every covered year. The separate 1986 and 1990 wiring PDFs add year-specific material, but this is not a complete OEM year-by-year electrical library.

Named tool references include J-34995 for LN8 front-cover and seal centering, J-34144-A valve-cover removers, J-33838 for front-axle pinion-shim setup, and J-33792 for side-bearing adjustment.

The LN8 section warns that prying on the valve cover can damage its sealing surface and that the different pushrod guides must return to their original positions. The T5 overhaul material also warns that incorrect countershaft support during bearing installation can permanently damage the transmission case.

The 61-page basic-troubleshooting file is general symptom-and-cause guidance, not model-specific diagnosis. The HVAC diagnostic supplement is labeled 1988–1989. The Holley, Rochester 4GC, and small-block rebuild PDFs are independent supplemental articles rather than S-series factory repair chapters.
