Chevrolet Camaro & Pontiac Firebird 1982–1992 Repair Manual Set

The two main references provide the vehicle repair information, while the separate articles address particular accessories and workshop projects. Pontiac coverage consists of the 1982 manual and selected later-model accessory articles.

The additional workshop articles are not model-specific F-body manuals. The Holley article uses a 1974 Corvette as its example; the Rochester article covers the 4GC/4-Jet rather than the E4ME. The small-block article begins after disassembly and cleaning.

Searchable Text, Diagram Detail and File Contents

Text search and navigation: Both main manuals have OCR text with recognition errors. The supplementary PDFs have searchable text, but lettering within embedded diagrams and illustrated test charts is not consistently searchable. None of the PDFs has embedded bookmarks. Small wiring labels on dense pages require zooming.

The ZIP contains 18 printable PDFs totaling 818 pages. These totals include the Clymer file’s 14 front-matter pages and four closing blank/notes pages, plus the Camaro reference’s four opening contents, blank, and vehicle-photo pages.

Engine, Driveline and Electrical Service

The following is a selected content preview, rather than a complete contents list. Further topics include rear-window defogger grid testing and power-seat adjuster phasing.

• Engine teardown and inspection: Step-by-step procedures for cylinder-head service, valve-train adjustment, camshaft work, piston inspection, and crankshaft bearings across the covered engine families.

• Fuel-system repair: Rochester E2SE and E4ME carburetor overhaul, mechanical and electric fuel-pump testing, throttle-body service, and port-injection component replacement.

• Manual transmission and clutch: Muncie and Borg-Warner four-speed overhaul, including mainshaft, countergear, and synchronizer work, alongside clutch removal, inspection, and installation.

Engine and Fuel-System Coverage

The engine sections distinguish four-cylinder, V6, and V8 configurations. The 1982 four-cylinder uses camshaft timing gears; the V6/V8 sections cover timing chains and sprockets. Carbureted, throttle-body injection, Crossfire, Multi-Port, and Tuned-Port configurations receive separate treatment.

The Camaro reference’s 1985-and-later supplement covers US-market revisions, including the 1990 change to the larger V6. Revised cylinder-head tightening procedures, roller lifters, and rear main seals are addressed alongside the original chapters. This arrangement helps you distinguish later service changes before selecting a repair procedure.

Injection coverage extends to fuel-rail and injector removal, idle-air-control checks, and throttle-position-sensor service. The Rochester E4ME exploded view supports carburetor bench work.

The torsional-damper procedure identifies puller J-23523 and V6 installer J-29113, with a warning that improper handling can destroy the damper’s tuning.

Transmission and Chassis Repair Scope

Four-speed bench work is illustrated by the Borg-Warner 4-Speed Transmission exploded view. Five-speed coverage focuses on external service and removal/installation.

200C and 700-R4 automatic-transmission coverage does not include internal overhaul. It addresses general diagnosis, maintenance, shift-linkage and TV-cable adjustment, and removal/installation.

Axle-code tables distinguish standard, Posi, and Borg-Warner configurations. Borg-Warner rear-axle coverage is limited to routine maintenance rather than internal repair. Later brake updates include an exploded view of the twin-piston front caliper and revised rear-disc and parking-brake procedures.

The driveshaft section warns that clamping the tube in a vise can distort it and cause driveline vibration after installation.

Electrical and Accessory Documentation

The accessory articles have their own year coverage, as listed above. Power-door-lock coverage includes symptom charts, circuit tests, and actuator and linkage service.

F Body Instrument Cluster Pin Testing provides pin-level checks. The cruise-control article directs Camaro diagnosis to Tests A–P, rather than the separately illustrated Cruise Control Flow Chart.

Model-specific wiring in the Clymer manual includes 1982 Firebird Headlight Doors, alongside starting, charging, lighting, and engine-control circuits. Later-model wiring is selective rather than a complete diagram set for every configuration.

The Camaro reference excludes the 1984 Berlinetta’s digital instrumentation and related dash accessories. Its later-model supplement also covers SIR airbag-module removal and installation.

Maintenance schedules distinguish normal and severe service. Reference tables supply component-specific torque specifications, ignition settings, drive-belt adjustment data, fluid capacities, and engine wear and clearance limits.

Cooling-system coverage extends from flushing and thermostat checks to water-pump and heater-core replacement. Body sections address doors, window regulators, liftglass, and interior trim.

Before putting a wrench to these systems, ensure you have the proper training; loaded suspension components and volatile fuel systems require appropriate shop precautions.

A Preview of V8 Bearing and Camshaft Specifications

For the 1982 5.0-liter V8, the Clymer manual specifies rear main-bearing clearance of 0.0025–0.0030 in. Its camshaft specifications list end play of 0.004–0.012 in. These are separate component specifications within the engine inspection data.
