BMW X5 E53 Service & Repair Manual Collection, 2000–2004

Finding text and reading diagrams: The PDFs contain searchable text, but small labels within wiring diagrams and many illustrations are not searchable. The general repair extract has an OCR layer with recognition errors. Small circuit labels require zooming. The ST036 booklet has limited bookmarks, mostly pointing to external files outside this download; the other PDFs have no embedded bookmarks.

The ZIP contains 35 printable PDFs in English, totaling 3,000 pages. This total includes two contents/index pages: one in the general repair extract and one in the ST036 booklet.

• Engine repair: Step-by-step procedures for engine removal, cylinder-head work, compression and oil-pressure checks, crankshaft bearings, pistons, camshaft timing, and VANOS service.

• Drivetrain: Transmission and transfer-case removal, propeller-shaft service, flex discs, centering mounts, CV joints, center bearings, axle shafts, and front-differential replacement.

M54 and M62 Mechanical Repair

Cylinder heads and bottom ends: The M54 material covers head disassembly, watertightness testing, resurfacing, valve seats and guides, main and connecting-rod bearings, pistons, and rings. The 4.6L procedures distinguish cylinder banks and include crankshaft and flywheel work, upper and lower oil pans, and timing covers.

Timing, lubrication, and cooling: Double VANOS work is documented for the M54; the M62 sections address camshaft-adjustment units and timing-chain replacement. Oil pumps, water pumps, thermostats, coolant manifolds, intake and exhaust manifolds, and oxygen sensors are also treated.

Shared VANOS instructions identify an M62 B46 exception: the multimeter continuity test described for other adjustment units does not apply to that version. The cylinder-head instructions also warn that oil or debris trapped in threaded block bores can crack the block.

Transmission, Shafts, and Axles

Transmission coverage concerns removal and installation, rather than internal gearbox overhaul. The AWD material explains the NV 125 transfer case, while the front-differential article specifies replacement of the assembly instead of an internal rebuild.

The propeller-shaft articles discuss deflection-angle requirements but direct readers to VIN-specific manufacturer information for the actual E53 angles. They also explain that the two-piece shaft is balanced as an assembly; incorrect alignment or allowing it to drop at its joints can damage the CV joint and rubber boot.

Suspension reference tables distinguish steel springs, single-axle air suspension, and two-axle air suspension.

Brake Diagnosis and Electrical Fault Tracing

Examples of M62 Crankshaft Clearance Data

For the M62 B44, the technical-data section lists radial crankshaft bearing clearance of 0.020–0.050 mm and crankshaft axial play of 0.085–0.257 mm. These are separate bearing and end-play specifications, presented alongside journal sizes and repair stages.
