Cylinder Heads, VANOS and Lubrication

Step-by-step instructions cover cylinder-head work and camshaft timing for the M52, M52 TU, and M54 six-cylinder engines and the non-VANOS M62 V-8. The procedures distinguish single VANOS from Double VANOS and illustrate dedicated equipment, including camshaft alignment tool BMW 11 3 240 and secondary-sprocket setup tool BMW 11 6 180. These references help identify tooling requirements before engine disassembly.

M62 TU limits: Cylinder-head and camshaft removal and installation, along with timing-chain/VANOS repair procedures, are excluded.

The camshaft-removal cautions explain how unsupported removal can break camshafts and damage the cylinder head. The V-8 lubrication section also warns that loose oil-pump fasteners, including the sprocket retaining nut, can cause oil starvation and engine failure.

Coolant Capacity and Clutch Wear Examples

The maintenance tables list an approximate coolant capacity of 11.4 liters (12.0 US qt) for the 1997 V-8 without a latent heater, with separate capacities for other configurations.

For clutch inspection, the manual specifies a minimum lining thickness of 1.0 mm (0.04 in), measured at the shallowest rivet head.
