This Kohler Command service manual, Form TP-2339-D (revised July 2002), covers 1991–2002 CV11-CV16, CV460-CV465, and CV490-CV495 vertical crankshaft engines, including electric-start, retractable-start, and combined-start versions.

Engine Service and Diagnostic Content

Automatic Compression Release (ACR) makes conventional compression readings difficult to interpret. The cylinder leakdown procedure and results chart help distinguish valve leakage from ring or cylinder wear before teardown.

Cylinder-head configurations: Separate procedures cover rocker-bridge heads and individual rocker-arm layouts with adjustable or non-adjustable valve lash. Hydraulic-lifter bleeding is addressed for the adjustable configuration. Reassembly also distinguishes connecting-rod bolt types and the balance-shaft installation used on CV460-CV495 engines.

The reference charts outline cylinder bore tolerances, piston clearances, crankshaft journal wear limits, and valve-train and hydraulic-lifter clearances. Repair procedures extend to cylinder boring and honing, valve-guide reaming, valve-seat reconditioning, valve lapping, and camshaft end-play checks with tool KO1031.

Cylinder bore crosshatch illustrations, engine dimensional drawings, and cylinder-head fastener torque-sequence charts accompany the procedures. The crankshaft reconditioning notes address grinding debris trapped in oil passages, which can cause severe engine damage.

Oil-system service: Gerotor pump rotor service is covered separately from oil-pickup and pressure-relief-valve work, which requires oil-pan removal. Early five-piece and later one-piece relief valves have different service instructions.

Gasoline, LPG and Governor Systems

Carburetor variants: Walbro and Nikki adjustments are treated separately, including fixed-idle and limiter-cap restrictions on certified engines. Troubleshooting tables address rich or lean running and governor hunting; repair coverage includes welch plugs, self-relieving chokes, and high-altitude jet provisions.

The carburetor exploded view, typical fuel-pump cutaway, and LPG-system schematic show the relevant component arrangements. Nylon-bodied fuel pumps are replacement-only. The pump installation notes warn that incorrect lever placement can damage both the pump and the engine.

Emission Sentry controls: The LPG section explains the oxygen-sensor feedback, fuel-metering valve, catalytic muffler, and fault shutdown circuit. Component diagnosis uses Emission Sentry Tester 12 761 07-S. Carburetor repair-kit selection is referred to the separate engine parts manual.

Electrical Diagnosis and Starter Repair

CV16 Smart Spark has dedicated spark advance module (SAM) tests and specifies ignition tester KO1046. The magneto-ignition procedure for the other covered models specifies KO1047.

Separate wiring diagrams and troubleshooting charts distinguish 3-amp unregulated charging, the optional 70-watt lighting/braking stator, and 15-amp regulated charging. The charging charts separate stator and diode faults from rectifier-regulator and battery problems.

Electric starter repair covers UTE, Nippendenso, and Delco-Remy solenoid-shift units as well as inertia-drive versions. The 110-volt AC starter used on some floor-care equipment is replacement-only.

Working with pressurized LPG fuel systems, tensioned recoil springs, and lethal exhaust gases carries inherent hazards. Always follow the complete manual's safety precautions and service procedures.
