Document Scope and Editions
The workshop repair material is the QT50/MA50 Service Manual, first edition September 1979, with English and French printed in parallel. The QT50J publication is the U.S.-market Owner’s Manual, first edition May 1981, Literature No. LIT-11626-02-97. It covers safety labels, motorcycle identification, controls, starting and riding, break-in guidance, daily pre-operation checks, periodic maintenance and lubrication charts, warranty information, specifications, and an owner-level wiring diagram.
That distinction matters when selecting the set. The full teardown, inspection, adjustment, and repair chapters are contained in the QT50/MA50 service publication. The QT50J file is an owner’s manual, not a later QT50J service supplement.
Engine, Fuel, and Shaft-Drive Repair
The service chapters carry the air-cooled, reed-valve two-stroke engine from removal through internal inspection and final installation. Major assemblies include the cylinder head and cylinder, piston and rings, crankshaft, crankcase, bearings and oil seals, wet centrifugal automatic clutch, kick starter, primary drive, and transmission. Factory inspection data covers component wear, clearances, runout, bearing condition, seal condition, and assembly-specific tightening requirements.
The shaft-drive section goes well beyond routine lubrication. It documents rear-arm and drive-housing removal, identifies the drive pinion, ring gear, shafts, bearings, spacers, shims, and seals in exploded views, and includes ring-gear deflection measurement, gear-tooth inspection, bearing checks, and installation requirements.
Carburetion coverage centers on the Mikuni VM12SC. The manual identifies the float chamber, float and needle valve, main, needle, and pilot jets, throttle slide, jet needle, pilot-air screw, and related passages for inspection and repair. Reed-petal condition, seating, and leakage are treated separately. Yamaha Autolube coverage includes air bleeding, pump-cable index adjustment, checks for blocked or incorrectly routed delivery lines, seal and fitting inspection, and a measured pump-output test.
Chassis, 6-Volt Electrical, and Factory Reference Data

The electrical chapter explains CDI operation and fault checking, wiring connections, magneto charge and pulser coils, ignition timing, spark-gap testing, the ignition coil, charging-circuit diagnosis, silicon-rectifier checks, battery service, and AC/DC lighting and signal circuits for the original 6-volt system.
Representative technical drawings include the carburetor and reed-valve exploded views, kick-starter and clutch assemblies, the shaft-drive breakdown, front and rear wheel assemblies, cable-routing views, and full wiring schematics. The service manual includes a general wiring layout and a separate diagram labeled for configurations except Australia and New Zealand. The QT50J owner’s manual adds its own component-labeled schematic and wire color-code key; the separate one-page PDF reproduces that diagram at a larger page size.
The special-tool section provides Yamaha tool numbers for the specified service equipment. Examples include the flywheel puller 90890-01189, crankcase separation tool 90890-01135, crank installer components 90890-01274 / 90890-01275 / 90890-01278, and electrotester 90890-03021.
Two manual-specific cautions are especially relevant during repair. The air-cleaner section warns that operation without the foam element changes carburetor behavior while admitting unfiltered air, which can cause rapid wear, overheating, and engine damage. The crankshaft installation material calls out protection of the crankshaft surface and oil-seal lips; scratches or seal damage can undermine an otherwise careful overhaul.
Fuel-system work, two-stroke lubrication checks, rotating-engine tests, brake repair, and road testing require suitable ventilation, fire precautions, stable machine support, and normal workshop safety practices.
