Engine, Clutch, and Fuel-System Depth
The engine material distinguishes the 999cc GL1000 from the larger 1,085cc GL1100 while retaining the shared horizontally opposed four-cylinder layout. Its overhaul sequence separates in-frame cylinder-head, valve, camshaft, rocker, and timing-belt work from engine-out oil-pump, rear-cover, crankcase, piston, connecting-rod, and crankshaft operations. Inspection tables provide component-specific torque data, clearances, wear limits, and service dimensions.
Transmission repair is not treated as a simple external adjustment. The manual shows the crankcase split required to reach the mainshaft, countershaft, shift forks, shift drum, and gearshift linkage, then identifies the changed GL1100 ratios used from 1982 onward. For the 1982-on self-canceling turn signals, coverage stops at wiring checks and known-good substitution because no factory component test data was available when the book was published.
Brake coverage separates the 1980-1981 single-piston calipers, 1982-on dual-piston calipers, and 1983 unified layout, where the rear pedal operates the rear and right-front brakes. It includes the matching bleeding sequence, metal-line routing, pressure-control valve, and hydraulic component service. Suspension material addresses air-assisted GL1100 forks and rear shocks, the 1982 low-air warning system, and 1983 TRAC anti-dive inspection and repair. The manual reserves 1980-1982 fork disassembly and internal GL1100 air-shock and final-drive work for shops with the required presses or Honda tools.
Rear-drive chapters add ring-and-pinion tooth-contact inspection, preload-shim selection, backlash checks, driveshaft service, and swingarm bearing work.
