Model-Year Coverage and System Changes

Model-year headers separate the original procedures from later additions. Coverage tracks the 1989 3.9-liter engine, Lucas 14CU EFI, and Borg Warner viscous-coupling transfer box; the 1990 Lucas 14CUX system, integrated WABCO ABS, and revised cooling layout; and the 1991 plastic fuel tank, combined pump/sender unit, improved vapor control, anti-roll bars, and glass sunroof. The 14CUX section also identifies the ECU and tune-select-resistor change after VIN 451518, preventing an earlier diagnostic routine from being applied to a later vehicle.

The ZF section covers static checks, line-pressure diagnosis, kickdown adjustment, transmission removal, control unit and valve-body setup, and overhaul of the governor, parking mechanism, planetary assemblies, and A-F clutch groups.

LT230 coverage includes removal, center differential rebuilding, input and intermediate gear work, bearing preload and torque-to-turn setup, output housings, and differential-lock and neutral-switch adjustment. The Borg Warner material is narrower: it covers lubrication, towing and dynamometer precautions, identification, and removal/refitting with the ZF assembly, but not an equivalent internal transfer-box overhaul.

Chassis procedures include ring-and-pinion setup, axle and hub rebuilding, front CV joints and swivel housings, steering-box overhaul, brake master cylinders, servos, calipers, and parking brakes. The 1990 ABS chapter adds hydraulic depressurization and bleeding, warning-light blink-code retrieval, wheel-sensor and solenoid testing, ECU checks, and dedicated circuit diagrams. Body coverage includes chassis datum drawings, aluminum-panel repair precautions, door and glass service, and sunroof adjustment.

Diagnostics, Diagrams, and Shop References

The electrical section provides main circuit diagrams for every model year from 1987 through 1991. Separate diagrams cover Lucas EFI, Hella cruise control, WABCO ABS, window lifts and door locks, and the heater/air-conditioning system. Troubleshooting charts support engine running faults, cooling, steering, ZF transmission, air conditioning, charging, starting, ignition, wipers, and central locking.

The service-tool section identifies factory equipment such as 18G1501 torque-converter handles, the LST118 transmission holding fixture, LST1016-1 clutch spring compressor, and 18G191 pinion-height setting gauge. Two cautions show the manual's repair-level detail: incorrect rocker-shaft orientation can restrict oil supply to the valve gear, while careless ZF torque-converter handling can damage the pump bush and seal lip.
