Honda Manual Features & Content Preview
- Coverage is specific to 2000–2003 Honda S2000 AP1 roadsters for the U.S. and Canadian markets, equipped with the F20C1 2.0L DOHC VTEC engine and SCYM 6-speed manual transmission.
- Engine repair coverage runs from engine removal and installation to internal inspection, including cylinder-head service, VTEC testing, valve adjustment, cam-chain timing, crankshaft and piston work, oil-pump overhaul, and cooling-system diagnosis.
- Clutch, transmission, and final-drive procedures address hydraulic clutch service, clutch and flywheel replacement, transmission teardown and reassembly, shaft and synchro inspection, preload and thrust-clearance adjustment, Torsen limited-slip differential service, and driveline work.
- Chassis sections support diagnosis as well as mechanical repair, with EPS fault tracing and torque-sensor neutral-position memorization, steering rack and column service, wheel alignment, suspension work, brake bleeding and caliper overhaul, plus four-channel ABS troubleshooting.
- Fuel, electrical, HVAC, body, and restraint systems are covered in depth, including PGM-FI/OBD-II diagnostics, EVAP and secondary-air systems, starting and charging, cruise control, air conditioning, convertible-top controls, body electrical circuits, and SRS service.
- Honda factory service publication, First Edition 09/2002 — 1,087 PDF pages, with factory procedures, special-tool references, torque and service-limit tables, circuit diagrams, connector views, troubleshooting charts, and exploded assembly illustrations.
Technical Documentation
This manual is organized around the actual AP1/F20C1/SCYM configuration rather than treating the S2000 as a generic platform. The identification pages break out 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2003 model-year VIN, engine-number, transmission-number, and paint-code information for U.S. and Canadian cars. Maintenance coverage is also separated between the 2000 model and the 2001–2003 models, with normal- and severe-condition schedules. Diagnostic details reflect year changes as well: the data-link connector location differs between 2000–2001 and 2002–2003 cars, and the steering section records a VIN break for steering-joint installation specifications.
Engine mechanical coverage starts with engine removal and installation, then moves through the F20C1 cylinder head, valvetrain, block, lubrication, intake, exhaust, and cooling systems. Factory procedures cover VTEC solenoid and rocker-arm testing, valve-clearance adjustment, crankshaft-pulley service, cam-chain removal and timing installation, cylinder-head removal and warpage inspection, rocker-shaft disassembly, camshaft inspection, valve-guide replacement, valve-seat reconditioning, and final cylinder-head installation. The block section adds main- and connecting-rod bearing replacement, crankshaft and piston removal, bore and piston inspection, honing, piston-ring service, crankshaft installation, and in-car crankshaft-seal replacement.
Drivetrain, Chassis, and Diagnostic Coverage
The clutch section documents pedal and switch adjustment, master- and slave-cylinder replacement, hydraulic bleeding, release-bearing inspection, and clutch, pressure-plate, and flywheel service. The 6-speed transmission material goes well beyond removal and installation. It covers mainshaft, countershaft, and secondary-shaft disassembly and inspection; shift-arm and fork service; synchro-ring, gear, sleeve, and hub checks; oil-pump clearance; secondary-shaft preload; mainshaft thrust clearance; and complete reassembly.
Rear-drive coverage includes the Torsen-type limited-slip differential operation check and precautions, differential removal and teardown, case assembly work, oil-seal replacement, backlash inspection, bearing preload and gear-tooth contact checks, reassembly, mount replacement, driveshaft service, and propeller-shaft inspection and installation.
PGM-FI diagnostics include DTC and symptom indexes, freeze-frame use, MIL and DLC circuit checks, ECM reset and idle-learn procedures, fuel-pressure testing, injector and sensor work, EVAP diagnosis, and pulsed secondary-air injection troubleshooting. Starting, ignition, charging, and cruise-control chapters combine circuit diagrams with component tests and input checks. EPS and ABS sections add system descriptions, DTC flowcharts, indicator-circuit diagnosis, control-unit testing, wheel-sensor checks, steering-gearbox overhaul, and required calibration procedures.
Body and cabin coverage includes doors and glass, interior trim, bumpers, subframes, the convertible top and its motors, removable-hardtop provisions, heating and air conditioning, keyless entry, power locks and windows, lighting, gauges, immobilizer, and SRS. Representative visuals include the Starting System Circuit Diagram, EPS Circuit Diagram, ABS Components Circuit Diagram, Convertible Top Circuit Diagram, Transmission Housing exploded view, and rear differential assembly exploded view.
Precision Data and Specifications
The reference tables supply component-specific torque data, fluid and refrigerant information, compression and pressure-test standards, electrical test values, wear limits, clearances, preload and backlash data, wheel-alignment settings, and adjustment specifications. Special-tool callouts are tied to the relevant repair procedures. Examples include holder handle 07JAB-001020A, 50 mm holder attachment 07JAB-001040A, clutch alignment shaft 07LAF-PT00110, differential oil-seal driver 07JAD-P190100, brake pushrod adjustment gauge 07JAG-SD40100, and SRS inflator simulator 07SAZ-TB4011A.
Several cautions are especially specific to this car. The cam chain must be kept away from magnets because magnetization can lead to misfires or false diagnostic codes. During engine installation, the prescribed mount-bolt and support-nut sequence matters; an incorrect sequence can create noise and vibration and shorten bushing life. Steering-wheel or column repair also requires the SRS cable reel to be centered, since misalignment can open the wiring and disable both the SRS and horn circuits.
Fuel-system pressure, refrigerant handling, brake hydraulics, rotating engine parts, and pyrotechnic SRS components all require the specified shop precautions and properly rated test equipment. The manual gives the factory safety notes and system-specific checks needed before disassembly, circuit testing, or return-to-service inspection.
