Ink System, Paper Feed, and Fault Diagnosis

These are selected service topics. The manual also includes control-panel menu maps and maintenance-mode settings.

• Printhead and ink path: Step-by-step service procedures cover the Ink System Unit, wiper cleaner, pressurizing unit, cartridge holders, ink selector, and supply tubes, with ink discharge and air-leak testing.
• Carriage and paper feed: Carriage (CR) and paper-feed (PF) motor and encoder replacement, APG mechanism service, rewind-unit removal, and cutter-unit replacement.

Ink Configurations and Copy Mode

The five-ink 7700/7710, 7700M/7710M, and 9700/9710 configurations use dedicated Photo Black and Matte Black nozzle rows and have no ink selector. The model-comparison tables help identify compatible pump/cap assemblies, cartridge holders, control panels, and main boards before ordering parts. They also record a December 2009 change that made a pump/cap assembly common to the 7900/7910/9900/9910 and WT7900/WT7910.

White Ink: WT7900/WT7910 coverage includes cleaning-liquid substitution, White Ink Refresh, and sedimentation. ClearProof Film troubleshooting distinguishes surface-print from reverse-print defects and gives a narrower operating temperature and humidity range than the printer’s general limits.

Copy Mode: The 7700M/7710M chapter covers enlarged copying from a directly connected GT-2500 scanner, copy settings, and error diagnosis. Internal scanner repairs are covered by the separate GT-2500 service manual.

Disassembly, Board Replacement, and Calibration

Disassembly flowcharts, including the Carriage Mechanism chart, show how to reach serviceable assemblies. Reassembly notes cover cable routing and ink-tube joint seals. Epson identifies precision-aligned frame components that must stay assembled.

AID board and printhead faults: AID-board procedures distinguish earlier and revised mounting arrangements and explain how to fit the revised board to an older chassis. Diagnostic checks address communication faults, current leakage at the flushing box, and automatic nozzle-detection failures. The service-call entry for 1A39 explains how a skewed head flat-flex cable can damage the printhead drive circuit or blow a main-board fuse.

After board replacement: The adjustment matrix separates work required after removal from work required after replacement. It gives different paths depending on whether the original NVRAM can be backed up. Procedures cover NVRAM backup and restoration, Head Rank ID entry, firmware installation, and CR/PF motor-characteristic input. The board-replacement notes identify when missing motor labels require replacing the associated motors.

Calibration and tools: Separate procedures cover Paper Thickness Sensor positioning, Ink Mark Sensor sensitivity, Rear Sensor AD adjustment, T&B&S margin adjustment, counter resets, and adjustment-result printouts. Color ID calibration applies to the 7900/7910/9900/9910 and covers on-site calibration, off-site chart measurement with a GretagMacbeth eye-one (i1), and validation charts.

Software-based adjustments require Epson’s separate Service Program. The tool list includes the Sonic Tension Meter U-507 (P/N 1294120), Cleaning PG Adjustment Jig (P/N 1507278), and Ink Leak Check Cartridge (P/N 1493143). Epson lists Windows 2000 and XP for the SpectroProofer inspection program, which includes checks for the ILS20EP color measurement device.

Wiring, Parts, and Maintenance

The Main Body Block Wiring Diagram, connector tables, and ASP name cross-reference help trace electrical faults and identify parts. The main-body diagram, parts lists, and exploded drawings use the 7900/7910/9900/9910 as their baseline. For other configurations, use the documented model differences and the applicable Service Parts Information.

The options table identifies compatible SpectroProofer configurations by printer model. Auto Take-up Reel coverage applies to the 9700/9710, 9900/9910, and 9890/9908.

The maintenance chapter covers ink-path cleaning, approved lubricants and their application points, storage, and transportation. Reference tables give electrical specifications, sensor detection criteria, adjustment tolerances, and operating and storage limits. Service precautions cover power isolation, residual electrical charge, and ink-system pressure. The manual identifies the tests that require power.

Belt Tension and Ink-Path Test Examples

For the 9890/9908, the carriage timing-belt adjustment specifies 45 ± 3 N measured on the rear side of the belt. The paper-feed timing-belt procedure specifies 10 ± 2 N after the belt has been loosened.

The ink supply path leak test specifies a starting pressure of 30–48 kPa and an acceptable pressure change of up to 0.4 kPa after about three minutes. The test applies after ink tube, cartridge holder, or damper replacement, or after a holder-to-damper joint has been loosened and retightened.
