Yanmar service manual HINSHI-H10-001-2, second revised edition, June 2001, covers the 1998–2001 6LP and 6LPA series marine diesel engines listed above, in inboard and sterndrive configurations.

Model Differences and Marine Drive Coverage

The 2001 revision adds 6LPA-DTP/DTZP/STP/STZP coverage. The 6LP-DTE procedures also apply to the 6LPA-DTP series, while 6LP-STE procedures apply to the 6LPA-STP series.

The 6LP-DTZE1/STZE1 variants omit the engine-mounted power steering pump, tank and cooler, although their nameplates read DTZE/STZE.

Marine gear specifications identify HURTH HSW630A1 and MERCRUISER BRAVO/Bravo X configurations; detailed drive servicing requires the drive manufacturer's manual. Boat-specific installations may differ from the standard engine described here.

Cylinder Head, Block and Timing Repair

Factory specifications include wear limits, oil clearances, fluid capacities and component-specific torque tables. Piston protrusion charts distinguish head gasket grades, while crankshaft bearing selection tables match journal markings to replacement bearing sizes, helping identify the appropriate parts before reassembly.

DTE engines use valve-lifter shims; STE engines use rocker arms and valve bridges. The timing sections distinguish the DTE tension spring from the STE belt tensioner.

The timing belt instructions warn that incorrect shaft positioning with the belt disengaged can cause piston-to-valve contact and damage the piston crowns and valve heads.

Fuel Injection and Turbocharger Service

Nozzle procedures distinguish the DTE capsule assembly from the STE spring-and-shim arrangement. They cover leakage, spray condition, needle lift, pre-lift and both opening pressures.

Starting, Charging and Fault Tracing

Starter tests cover pull-in, hold-in, pinion return and no-load operation. Alternator checks address the IC regulator, rotor, stator and rectifier.

Wiring diagrams cover the B-type panel and C/D-type combinations with a second B-type or C-type panel, with wire-color keys and coupler views. Engine troubleshooting charts address hard starting, uneven running, sudden stops, exhaust color, low output and knocking.
