Frame flanges and prohibited zones must not be drilled or welded; uncontrolled heat or unsmoothed weld beads can create stress concentrations and cracking, while nearby wiring and fuel-system parts can also be damaged. The R065 pinion uses a new, direction-sensitive collapsible spacer—reuse or reversal can leave bearing preload incorrect and damage the gear set. Foundation-brake drums must not be machined beyond their discard limits because an over-thinned drum raises the risk of drum failure and brake malfunction.
