Engine Internals and Lubrication

The 88 cu. in. (1450 cc), 45-degree air-cooled V-twin coverage traces oil flow and breather operation alongside twin-gerotor dry-sump oil-pump service. Cylinder heads, cylinders, pistons, pushrods and lifters have inspection procedures and service wear limits.

Cam support plate, cam-chain and oil-pump alignment procedures identify the HD-42313 tensioner unloader and HD-43644 camshaft/camshaft bearing remover/installer. Illustrations include Engine Oil Flow - Bottom End and Cam Support Plate Torque Sequence.

Flywheel/connecting-rod limit: These components are replaced together as one assembly; the manual directs the assembly to the factory for service or replacement.

Head-bolt retightening can damage the engine, and releasing a retracted cam-chain tensioner with the chains and sprockets removed can stretch its spring or crack the shoe.

Suspension, Wheels and Brake Variants

FXDX and FXDXT use dual front calipers and 39 mm cartridge-valve forks with spring-preload, rebound and compression adjustments; their rear shocks have rebound and preload adjustments. Other Dyna versions have different fork and rear-shock procedures.

Master-cylinder compatibility: Dual-disc systems use an 11/16 in. bore; single-disc systems use a 9/16 in. bore. The assemblies and repair-kit parts are not interchangeable. The procedures also flag possible damage to the front stoplight-switch boot and plunger if the protective insert is omitted.

Preview: Oil Pressure, Clutch Free Play and Float Level

Oil-pressure testing specifies 30–38 PSI at 2000 RPM with engine oil at 230°F (110°C). Clutch adjustment specifies 1/16–1/8 in. (1.6–3.2 mm) free play between the cable ferrule and lever bracket after internal adjustment, with the motorcycle at room temperature.

The C.V. carburetor float-level specification is 0.413–0.453 in. (10.49–11.51 mm), measured from the O-ring flange face to the float perimeter with the carburetor tilted 15–20 degrees from its manifold-side base.
