Valvetrain and Dry-Sump Lubrication

The liquid-cooled, five-valve DOHC single uses dry-sump lubrication. The drivetrain pairs a wet multi-disc clutch with chain final drive. Valvetrain procedures cover camshaft timing, valve pad selection, valve guide replacement, and automatic decompression checks. The lubrication section distinguishes feed and scavenging pump inspection from routine oil and filter changes.

Yamaha identifies the crankcase separator YU-A9642 and universal clutch holder YM-91042 in the workshop procedures.

ECU Diagnostics and Electrical Fault Tracing

System diagrams and component tests cover ignition, starting, charging, lighting, and the cooling fan. For a no-crank fault, the starting-system chart helps isolate a starter motor or relay problem from a neutral or clutch switch fault.

The owner’s book explains the instruments and controls, engine break-in, and storage preparation. Routine maintenance includes spark plug inspection and replacement, foam air filter cleaning, and spark arrester cleaning. The emissions and general maintenance charts give calendar, mileage, and operating-hour intervals, identify jobs that require dealer tools and skills, and flag riding conditions that call for more frequent service.

Separate B and SEB cowling and panel procedures show which bolts and quick fasteners to expect when opening the bodywork for maintenance or rear spring preload adjustment. The setup sections cover spring preload, rebound, and high- and low-speed compression damping for the double-wishbone front and linked swingarm rear suspension.

Workshop shock service is limited to removal, inspection, external adjustment, and assembly replacement. Follow Yamaha’s safety procedures when servicing hydraulic brakes or handling gas-charged shocks.

Wiring, Routing, and Assembly References

The 2009 YFZ450RY full-vehicle wiring diagram comes in black-and-white and color versions with a separate component and wire-color legend. Lubrication charts, cooling diagrams, and cable routing views show oil flow and the routing of hoses, cables, and wiring. Exploded views and job tables accompany component removal and installation.

The camshaft procedure warns that uneven tightening can damage the cylinder head, camshaft caps, and camshafts. The rear axle procedure warns that direct hammer blows can damage axle threads and splines.

Valve Clearance and Fuel Pressure Examples

The YFZ450RY valve adjustment section specifies 0.10–0.15 mm on the intake side and 0.20–0.25 mm on the exhaust side. Both clearances are measured with the engine cold at room temperature and the piston at top dead center on the compression stroke.

The fuel pressure check specifies 324.0 kPa (47.0 psi) with the engine running. Other workshop tables give component wear limits, engine and chassis torque values, fluid capacities, tire pressures, and electrical resistance and voltage specifications.
