International Manual Features & Content Preview

International Harvester factory service manual GSS-1404, Revision 4 (July 1979) covers the International Cub Cadet 73, 106, 107, 126, 127, and 147 tractors and IH equipment.

  • Engine repair: Kohler engine removal, cylinder-block reboring, piston and connecting-rod inspection, valve train service, automatic compression release, and Model 147 dynamic balance gears.

  • Gear-drive transmission: Tractor splitting and recoupling, clutch and reduction-drive service, sliding spur gear transmission repair, differential adjustment, and creeper-drive overhaul.

  • Hydrostatic transmission: Unit removal, pump and motor disassembly, charge-pump and valve service, internal inspection, reassembly, and speed-control linkage adjustment.

  • Steering and brakes: Steering assembly overhaul, front axle pivot and wheel-bearing service, brake inspection, and model-specific pedal and linkage adjustments.

  • Electrical system: Motor-generator brush service, regulator and cut-out relay adjustments, ignition breaker-point and condenser checks, plus starting, lighting, and electric-lift wiring diagrams.

  • PTO and equipment: Front PTO clutch adjustment, rear PTO service, electric power lift repair, mower spindle work, snow thrower gearbox service, and rotary tiller tine assembly.

This manual suits mechanics and experienced owners familiar with internal engine work and precision measurement; hydrostatic overhaul requires a press and a holding fixture.

Engine, Carburetor, and Governor Service

Engine procedures cover teardown, wear inspection, valve-seat and guide work, and reassembly. Model 147 receives separate crankshaft, stub-shaft, and dynamic balance-gear timing instructions. Connecting-rod assembly instructions specify a two-stage bolt-tightening procedure.

The K-161 crankshaft-seal procedure identifies seal protectors FES 54-4 and FES 54-5 and driver FES 54-6. Carburetor exploded views accompany cleaning, float adjustment, and reassembly; governor sections distinguish the Model 73 linkage from the larger engines.

Carburetor service specifically warns that forcing the mixture screws into their seats can damage them.

Gear Drive, Hydrostatics, and Chassis

Transmission variants: Models 73, 106, and 126 use the gear-drive procedures; Models 107, 127, and 147 have separate hydrostatic procedures. Rear axle and power-train cross sections support the mechanical work, alongside tooth-bearing pattern charts for bevel-pinion backlash adjustment.

Differential carrier-bearing preload checks are distinguished from the bevel-pinion bearing rolling-torque and snap-ring selection procedure used on hydrostatic models.

Hydrostatic diagnosis: Troubleshooting for slow travel or failure to move links control-linkage binding, suction leaks, charge-pump problems, and check-valve faults to further checks. This helps narrow the fault before deciding whether the transmission needs internal overhaul. The hydraulic flow and control diagram shows the pump, motor, valves, and neutral-return linkage together.

The disassembly instructions warn that pistons can fall from the cylinder blocks and be damaged. Heavy components are involved in tractor splitting; secure the chassis on load-rated stands before drivetrain work or hydrostatic testing.

Steering and brakes: Exploded steering views support cam and follower inspection. Brake coverage separates the Model 73 countershaft disc from the external rear-axle calipers on the other models, including brake equalization and neutral-return adjustment.

Ignition, Charging, and Power Lift

Electrical coverage includes battery ignition, current-voltage regulator contact service, cut-out relay settings, and ignition timing. Advanced motor-generator testing beyond brush inspection and replacement is referred to the separate GSS-1052-C service manual, which is not included.

Electric power lift troubleshooting addresses stalled, slow, or one-direction operation. Repair sections distinguish early pinned-clevis units from later slip-clutch versions; the lift motor is serviced as a complete replacement unit.

PTO and Attached Equipment

Front PTO work includes friction-disc and pressure-plate inspection and adjustment with the gauge supplied in the clutch-disc repair kit. Rear PTO sections cover shaft, bearing, seal, and shifter-clutch inspection.

Mower coverage extends to spindle bearings, blade sharpening, belt tension, and deck leveling. Snow thrower coverage is limited to gearbox service. The International No. 1 rotary tiller section covers left/right tine positioning, extension timing, and gearbox bearings and seals.

Compression, Head Torque, and Voltage Examples

These figures are a small sample of the engine and electrical data in the manual. Compression of 110–120 psi applies to engines in top mechanical condition using the specified automatic-compression-release test methods.

Final cylinder-head fastener torque is 200 in-lb for the K-161 and 420 in-lb for the K-241, K-301, and K-321, with even, staged tightening.

The Delco-Remy current-voltage regulator has a listed setting range of 13.6–14.5 volts.

PDF Navigation and Page Count

Text search and diagram detail: Text is partially searchable; several specification tables and diagram pages lack usable text search. Two bookmarks link to the additional front page and the manual cover, without chapter navigation. Small wiring labels require zooming for comfortable reading.

Supplied as one printable, 134-page PDF in English. The total includes 133 manual pages, including the original covers and hydrostatic transmission diagram, plus one additional introductory page.
