1988–2005 Toro Groundsmaster 220-D/223-D Mower Service Manual (P/N 88712SL)

This Toro service and overhaul manual, P/N 88712SL, Rev. H, covers the 1988–2005 Groundsmaster 220-D and 223-D commercial mowers. Companion engine manuals are included for the Groundsmaster 224, 225, 1000L, and 228-D applications identified in the main manual.

Mitsubishi Diesel Overhaul and Fuel Testing

The 220-D uses the Mitsubishi L3C-61TG; the 223-D uses the L3E-61TG. Internal repair coverage extends to timing gears, camshafts, pistons, connecting rods, crankshaft inspection, and cylinder-bore measurements, with standard dimensions, repair limits, and component-specific torque tables.

Fuel-system procedures cover the electric fuel pump, injection pump, and nozzle assemblies. Delivery-volume, pressure, and pump-barrel calibration are assigned to a professional diesel service shop with dedicated test fixtures. Water-pump service and cooling-fan repairs are also covered.

Hydrostatic Drive, Axles, and Steering

Charge-pressure and flow tests help distinguish a charge-pump fault from leakage in the hydrostat before transmission teardown. The hydraulic schematic and separate steering-circuit drawings show the shared oil supply and steering priority.

Transmission overhaul includes piston-group, swash-plate, and valve-plate inspection, followed by priming procedures. The manual warns that mixing components between pump and motor cylinder-block assemblies can cause internal transmission failure. The standard lift cylinder is treated as a replacement assembly, not a rebuildable component.

Electrical Fault Tracing and Cutting-Unit Repairs

Groundsmaster wiring schematics distinguish the 220-D and 223-D configurations by drive type and serial number. These diagrams help match interlock, glow-plug, and engine-stop circuits to the machine before electrical testing.

PTO coverage includes clutch, pulley, belt, shaft-bearing, and universal-joint work. Cutting-unit sections distinguish aluminum and cast-iron gearboxes and include blade-spindle service, caster repairs, and blade-height checks. The Guardian 62 Recycler has its own hydraulic schematic and troubleshooting section.

For the Mitsubishi diesels, the specification table gives injection timing as 19° BTDC ±1.5° at the smoke-set position. Cold intake and exhaust valve clearance is 0.25 mm (0.0098 in.).

For the Dana GT-20 differential, ring-gear-to-pinion backlash is 0.003–0.007 in., alongside the instructions for checking tooth contact and adjusting the gear set.
