Service Content and Technical Overview
The coverage is not limited to scheduled maintenance. It explains the Firebolt’s unusual structural layout: the aluminum frame doubles as the fuel tank, while the swingarm serves as the oil reservoir. The engine is carried in an isolator mounting system. The engine-rotation procedure allows top-end repair with the powertrain still in the chassis. Separate sections cover full engine removal and installation for deeper crankcase, flywheel, and transmission service.
The engine and fuel-system chapters distinguish the 984 cc XB9R from the 1203 cc XB12R wherever specifications, intake hardware, primary-drive tools, or control systems differ. DDFI coverage explains the returnless fuel system, open- and closed-loop operation, check-engine-lamp diagnostics, stored trouble codes, sensor testing, fuel-pump service, and throttle-body work. On the XB12R, the interactive exhaust material follows the system from cable adjustment and muffler-valve operation through the actuator, dedicated harness, ECM command, and position-feedback circuit. It is not an XB9R system.

Chassis chapters extend that coverage into component removal, inspection, repair, and installation rather than stopping at adjustment data.
Specifications and Reference Data
Factory reference information is placed with the related jobs. It covers maintenance schedules, component-specific torque tables, approved fuel and lubricant requirements, fluid capacities, tire fitment and inflation data, inspection limits, runout checks, engine clearances, and electrical test specifications. The suspension tables organize front and rear preload, compression damping, and rebound damping by rider weight and cargo load. This supports baseline setup as well as post-repair checks.
The tool appendix identifies the equipment expected for major work. Engine and transmission examples include the HD-43984 crankshaft locking tool and HD-46285 transmission assembly fixture. Fuel and electrical diagnosis use the B-45522 fuel-pressure gauge adapter, HD-42682 breakout box, and HD-44750 Digital Technician. Primary-drive locking is model-specific: HD-38362 for the XB9R and HD-46283 for the XB12R. That split matters before clutch or primary-drive repair is scheduled and tooling is ordered.

The clutch/mainshaft washer must face the correct direction—the side marked “out” faces the nut—or transmission damage can result. It likewise warns against twisting the drive belt or rolling it partway onto a sprocket, either of which can damage the belt. Engine-rotation, rear-isolator, and swingarm work must be performed with the motorcycle secured at the specified lift, jacking, hoist, and tie-down points before the chassis is separated from the engine.
