This official Kymco OEM publication (P/N 4122-ATV250-S00, First Edition, June 2005) covers the Maxxer and Mongoose 250/300 ATV family documented in this edition. The model-specific specification sections identify the 250 platform as LA50 and the 300 as LA60; the LA50 section is headed Maxxer 250/Mongoose 250 and also lists the MXER 250R. The manual shows frame and engine serial-number locations but does not publish a chassis serial-number coverage range. The PDF contains 251 pages.

Factory procedures also cover carburetor disassembly and float-level inspection, oil-pump inspection, radiator pressure testing, water-pump/mechanical-seal replacement, thermostat and thermosensor testing, front/rear brake bleeding, master-cylinder and caliper repair, wheel-hub bearings, tie-rods and ball joints, steering, rear axle/hub work, and swing-arm inspection. Scope is explicit: transmission service can be performed with the engine installed, while water-pump service and crankcase separation require engine removal.

Specification Highlights and Diagnostic Data

Engine oil capacity is 1.6 L (1.7 US qt) at disassembly and 1.4 L (1.48 US qt) at a change. SAE 90 gear oil is 400 cc at disassembly and 300 cc at a normal change. Total coolant capacity is 1.4 L, split between a 1.1 L radiator and 0.3 L reserve tank; radiator-cap relief pressure is 0.75–1.05 kgf/cm² (75–105 kPa, 10.65–14.91 psi).

One specification conflict in the factory publication is worth noting. The model-specific tables list cylinder compression at 15 kgf/cm² (1500 kPa, 213 psi) for the 250 and 16 kgf/cm² (1600 kPa, 227 psi) for the 300, while the general Chapter 3 compression-test page prints 16 kg/cm² as its reference value. That distinction matters when using the manual as a diagnostic baseline.

Electrical repair coverage includes a 12 V/12 Ah battery, charging limit-voltage/current testing, regulator/rectifier checks, A.C. generator resistance tests, ignition-unit/change-gear-control inspection, ignition-coil and pulser-coil measurements, starter-motor continuity/brush limits, starter-relay testing, and starter-clutch inspection. Named technical views and charts include Cable & Harness Routing, Charging Circuit, Ignition Circuit (On Road), Starting Circuit, Engine Will Not Start or Is Hard to Start, and Wiring Diagram: Off Road Type. A separate on-road wiring sheet is included, while instrument, horn, position light, and turn-signal service are marked on-road only.

The maintenance schedule uses an initial 100 mi/150 km/1-month point, then 600 mi/1000 km/6-month and 1200 mi/2000 km/12-month intervals. Air-filter service is called out every 20–40 hours, with coolant replacement every 24 months.

Several factory cautions show the repair depth. The CVT chapter requires a clutch spring compressor to prevent spring damage and warns against grease or oil on the belt, pulley faces, or clutch linings. During piston/cylinder work, the manual calls out ring-mark orientation and 120° end-gap staggering while warning against breaking the rings during cylinder installation. Rear-caliper repair specifies gradual rather than high-pressure air for piston removal, warns against scratching the cylinder bore, and states that removed piston and dust seals are not to be reused.

For actual service, follow the manual’s precautions for gasoline, battery electrolyte, hot pressurized coolant, hydraulic brakes, rotating components, and securely supporting the ATV during chassis work.
