System Operation and Application

The two chapters are not interchangeable. RL4R01A is the hydraulic-governor unit. Its coverage follows the governor valve, throttle wire, control cable, hydraulic shift valves, accumulators, brake band, and P1775 torque-converter-clutch solenoid circuit.

RE4R01A is the TCM-controlled V6 unit. It traces the shift, line-pressure, overrun-clutch, and torque-converter-clutch solenoids and adds VG33ER-only turbine-revolution-sensor procedures.

Identification tables list RL4R01A code 49X11. RE4R01A codes are divided by engine and drivetrain: 43X64 for VG33E 2WD, 4EX01 or 4FX06 for VG33E 4WD, 4EX67 for VG33ER 2WD, and 4EX68 or 4FX07 for VG33ER 4WD. Those codes matter when matching shift schedules, fluid-capacity tables, sensor content, and rebuild data to the truck.

Troubleshooting and On-Vehicle Repair

RL4R01A diagnosis starts with fluid condition, stall, line-pressure, governor-pressure, and road tests. Its symptom chart tells the reader which checks stay on the truck and which require transmission removal. It addresses harsh N-to-D engagement, shift shock, clutch or band slip, poor starting power, high or low shift points, missing upshifts or downshifts, and engine-braking or lock-up faults.

On-vehicle chapters cover the control valve and accumulators, rear oil seal, parking components, governor valve, throttle-wire and control-cable adjustment, PNP switch setting, and shift-lock electrical system.

RE4R01A adds CONSULT-II data monitoring, self-diagnosis without CONSULT-II, TCM terminal/reference tables, DTC confirmation, and fail-safe information. Its DTC chapters isolate power supply, the PNP switch, fluid-temperature and speed sensors, 1st-through-4th gear-ratio faults, lock-up control, line pressure, shift solenoids, throttle-position input, overrun-clutch control, and control-unit RAM/ROM/EEPROM faults. A separate set of 21 symptom-driven workflows addresses no-start conditions, unintended movement in P or N, no creep, missing shifts, lock-up complaints, and loss of engine braking. Bench Overhaul, Tools, and Specifications

Bench repair begins with component and oil-channel layouts, plus dedicated location drawings for needle bearings, thrust washers, and snap rings. The teardown and repair chapters cover the oil pump and both valve bodies. Separate sections handle the reverse, high, forward, and overrun clutches; low-and-reverse brake; forward clutch drum; rear internal gear and forward clutch hub; band servo piston; parking pawl; adjustments; and final assembly.

Kent-Moore tool references include the J34301-C pressure-gauge set, J37068 transmission case stand, J37065 torque-converter one-way-clutch checker, J34285/J34285-87 clutch spring compressor, J26082 seal drift, and J34291 shim-setting gauge. The SDS tables gather component-specific torque specifications, shift schedules, stall and line-pressure standards, fluid types and application-specific capacities, return-spring data, clutch and brake clearances, oil-pump clearances, end-play limits, solenoid resistance, and sensor test values.

Valve-body parts must remain in their original order and position; mixing valves, plugs, sleeves, or springs can cause sticking and incorrect hydraulic operation. When clutch or band material is found in the ATF, the manual calls for radiator replacement and cooler-line flushing so debris is not fed back into the repaired transmission.
