Perkins Engine and CAV Fuel System
Major chapters map out the timing gear housing, camshaft, and valve train configurations. Internal engine work extends to connecting rods and bearings, crankshaft inspection, rear oil-seal replacement, and oil-pump clearance checks. Cooling-system service covers radiator removal, the thermostat, and water-pump overhaul.
The manual distinguishes early dual valve springs from the single-spring arrangement used after September 1970. Plain and cadmium-plated connecting-rod nuts receive different tightening specifications. These distinctions matter when selecting repair data for an engine that has earlier or replacement components.
The timing gear train illustration (Fig. 21) supports assembly checks. The accompanying precautions identify the risk of valve and piston damage from independent camshaft and crankshaft movement during timing-gear removal.
Injector testing addresses opening pressure, seat leakage, back leakage, and spray pattern, with a fuel-system schematic (Fig. 48) showing the circuit layout. Internal injection-pump and governor overhaul is referred to an authorized CAV service station; this is not a pump bench-rebuild manual.
Clutch, Transmission, and Rear-Axle Repair
The dual-disc dry clutch uses two-stage pedal control for separate transmission and PTO drives. Its service sections distinguish pedal free-travel adjustment from internal release-lever settings and PTO clutch wear adjustment.
Transmission coverage follows the range gears, reverse gear cluster, shift rails, and interlocks. The synchromesh cutaway (Fig. 103) illustrates synchronization only between fifth and sixth gears. Both gears are locked out in low range.
Rear axle service includes shaft removal and bearing-preload adjustment, while the differential lock section covers removal and linkage adjustment. Final-drive work includes bull gears, bull pinions, differential side-bearing preload, and ring-gear backlash adjustment. Disc-brake removal and adjustment are covered separately.
Hydraulic Lift and Hydrostatic Steering
The hydraulic chapters explain how the lift arm control valve and draft sensing linkages operate. A functional valve sketch (Fig. 138) supports the discussion of slow-lower adjustment, lift-arm height, sensitivity control, and sensing-spring calibration.
The optional remote circuit serves double-acting cylinders only. Main hydraulic pump overhaul is limited to seals, gaskets, and cleaning; the manual calls for complete pump replacement when worn internal parts prevent restoration of pressure or flow.
Steering has its own belt-driven pump, independent of the implement hydraulics. The steering control-valve exploded view (Fig. 5) distinguishes locator-bushing and thrust-bearing versions. Pump repair notes explain how prying between its gasketless sections can damage the sealing faces and cause pressure leaks.
Specification and Reference Data
Technical specifications are categorized for quick shop reference. The tables list exact tolerances for crankshaft journals, valve guides, and cylinder liners. Component-specific torque data, fluid capacities, wear limits, and electrical test specifications accompany the service sections.
Dimensioned tool drawings cover a clutch alignment tool, pinion-depth template, and lift-shaft bushing puller-installer. The general wiring diagram (Fig. 146) identifies wire colors and connections for charging, starting, lighting, instruments, and the cold-start preheater. Always prioritize shop safety. Heavy mechanical work, including tractor splitting and hydraulic testing, demands following proper procedures and relying on authoritative service data to prevent injury or equipment failure during a teardown.
