Engine Identification and Service Scope

Identification drawings locate model and serial-number plates on the engine, drive, and transom shield. Engine identification is on the port side of the engine cover and/or beside the flywheel housing; exact product applicability follows Service Bulletin 04-2-67, version 1, dated August 2007.

This volume concentrates on base-engine work. EFI diagnostics, detailed electrical/ignition/fuel-system service, and removal and installation of the engine in the boat are referred to separate manuals.

Internal Engine Repair and Assembly

Cylinder-block inspection and piston selection are supported by production and service limits. The bearing section distinguishes micrometer measurements from plastic-gauge checks and specifies the micrometer method for connecting-rod bearing clearance.

Cylinder-head reconditioning includes intake/exhaust valve-stem seal identification. Illustrated tools include the J 33049 camshaft bearing service kit and J 36660 electronic torque angle meter.

Incorrect lower intake manifold tightening can distort crankshaft bearing-bore alignment and damage the bearings; the installation section explains this component-specific risk.

Cooling, Storage, and Return to Service

Separate draining instructions address raw-water-cooled engines and the seawater side of closed cooling. GL and GXi circulating-pump procedures are distinguished, and the circulating pump is treated as a replacement unit.

Crossing the raw-water pump hoses can damage the impeller and engine. Off-season storage guidance distinguishes carburetor fogging from the storage-mixture approach used for fuel-injected engines.

General maintenance also covers oil and filter service, engine break-in, the 20-hour check, submerged-engine or water-ingestion recovery, and preparation for boating after storage.

Review the manual's precautions for fuel pressure, ignition isolation, gasoline vapors, and lifting heavy engine components before service work.

Assembly Torque and Crankshaft Clearance: Selected Examples

These examples represent a small selection of the assembly data provided for the 5.0L and 5.7L engines.

Cylinder-head bolt data pair an initial 30 N·m pass with final angles determined by bolt length: 75° for long bolts, 65° for medium bolts, and 55° for short bolts. The lower intake manifold table lists 3 N·m for the first pass, 12 N·m for the second, and 15 N·m for the final pass.

Crankshaft end play is 0.050-0.20 mm, measured with the crankshaft bearings and caps installed and the cap fasteners tightened to specification.
